Summary









Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Manager of Facilities, the Grounds Foreman


performs work of an administrative, technical, supervisory, and manual nature involved in the


provision of a Grounds program for Mission Public Schools. The Grounds Foreman is responsible


for the maintenance of playing fields, and playgrounds, planted areas, field drainage systems and


parking lots. A preventative maintenance program is overseen and performed by the Grounds


Foreman, along with repair, renovations, and new construction work.







The Grounds Foreman plans, schedules and assigns work to grounds personnel and provides


supervision, ensuring that standards are met. The job requires that changes be recommended to


established methods or procedures. Work involves a choice of methods or procedures or


sequence of operation. Considerable independence of judgment is exercised by the Grounds


Foreman in dealing with daily operations, within departmental guidelines.


Regular written reports of Grounds activities are provided by the Grounds Foreman to the


Manager of Facilities, or the Director of Operations who are consulted about difficult problems or


concerns, along with proposals for resolutions, where possible.









Duties include, but are not limited to:



Supervise planned maintenance program of district grounds, consistent with departmental

policy and standards

Assess maintenance and repair work required by inspecting school district properties -

estimating time and material costs and determining methods and equipment to be used

Plan, schedule and supervise the work of grounds staff, including temporary employees

hired for seasonal work

Provide corrective feedback and developmental support to Grounds 1 and 2 Workers Provide input to Manager of Facilities regarding grounds department budget, eg. cost of

new construction projects, equipment replacement

Assist in the inspection of contracted grounds projects to ensure standards are met Maintain a suitable inventory of materials, supplies and equipment, ordering items as per

departmental guidelines, preparing purchase requisitions as required

Perform manual grounds work as required, driving trucks, operating equipment such as

tractors with front end loader or back and front blades, movers, trimmers, sprayers, level;


performs minor repairs and maintenance of equipment

Attend departmental and supervisory meetings as required Development and implementation of Pest Management Plan Playground and site inspections and site maintenance Prepare reports on the status of grounds work as requested for the Manager of Facilities

or the Director of Operations, and consults with Manager or Director on concerns,


suggestions, etc.

Consult with Foreman and Facilities staff on projects involving other departmental staff to

coordinate activities, meets with school principals on grounds matters concerning their


schools

Ensure a Drivers' Abstract is completed and on file for all grounds staff Maintain professional, ethical behavior and confidentiality Performs other related duties as may reasonably be expected of a person in this position




Required Qualifications:









Grade 12 Graduation Completion of a Landscape Management or Horticulture Certificate Program A valid Pesticide Applicator's Certificate and knowledge of herbicide materials and

practices

Valid B.C. Class 5 driver's license; a driver's abstract to be provided annually




Required Experience:









A minimum of three (3) years' experience in a similar role Previous supervisory experience of three (3) years and ability to train staff on new

procedures and regulations









Required Skills and Abilities:









Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and practices involved in grounds

maintenance and construction including landscaping theory and practices, field drainage


systems, septic tank disposal systems, horticulture (as related to school districts) and site


development

Ability to lay out work and draw simple plans; ability to read blue-prints and drawings Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate good public relations skills, exercising

good judgment in dealing with a variety of enquiries

Ability to work cooperatively with others including both department and other school district

staff

A thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and

equipment of the trade

Ability to use some independent judgment in performing assigned tasks following

departmental procedures


Sufficient physical strength and health to perform manual work, operate grounds
equipment, work outdoors, to lift materials, work in confined spaces, and to work in


extreme temperature conditions (hot and cold)

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to develop and follow maintenance schedule Ability to use safe lifting and carrying techniques Ability to estimate time and materials costs and make recommendations on budget

matters

Ability to maintain records and write basic reports, purchase requisitions Ability to set and read levels and perform field surveys Previous supervisory experience and ability to train staff on new procedures and / or

regulations; ability to provide corrective feedback and performance management

Working knowledge of school district operations, policies and procedures
