Who we are

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province\xe2\x80\x99s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province\xe2\x80\x99s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario\xe2\x80\x99s electricity needs \xe2\x80\x93 now and into the future.
The opportunity
The Technical Writing Specialist will work with a team of highly technical experts on solution and system design. Lead the development of all design and technical documentation as it relates to business requirements, project management, solution specifications and training materials required for business processes, information systems and related tools associated with policies and standards used within the Smart Metering Entity/IESO organization.
Provide guidance regarding the appropriate use and interpretation of information produced by, or related to Smart Metering Entity and participate in internal and external stakeholdering and ensure feedback is incorporated into technical documentation.
What you\xe2\x80\x99ll do
  • Document the proposed changes and technical designs arising from Smart Metering activities
  • Develop appropriate processes to support Smart Metering activities and document technical design process objectives, tasks, risks and controls in summary documentation (e.g. risk-control matrices).
  • On an on-going basis, assist technical experts, design team and leadership team to drive towards an effective and efficient documentation process.
  • Develop training materials for self-directed or teacher facilitated training using different tools.
  • Deliver new or revised IESO-controlled documents as required within the design process and continually improve the documentation processes of the group.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate processes, systems and analytic tools used to evaluate and estimate impact of changes in the Smart Metering design.
  • Provide other IESO staff with guidance regarding the appropriate use of technical documentation and identify that standards, procedures, policies and other internal documentation are consistent with the technical documentation.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of internal and external training as required.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the supervisor\xe2\x80\x99s team to effectively implement the goals of the team within the context of the broader corporate direction.
  • Participate in internal and external stakeholdering and ensure feedback is incorporated into technical documentation
  • Perform other duties as required.

What you need to succeed
Education:
  • Requires knowledge of to interpret highly technical information and translate into procedural instructions. Requires analytical and organization skills, excellent written and oral communication skills in order to prepare effective reports, business process documentations, guides, system documentations, and to deal effectively with contacts involved in accomplishing work objectives.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the successful completion of four years university education in the appropriate field, or the equivalent.

Experience:
  • Requires experience to understand business processes as they relate to the development, implementation and maintenance of documentation on business policies, procedural instructions and other related documentation and reports.
  • Requires proven excellent facility in written and oral communications, including the ability to prepare effective documentation, recommendations and reports.
  • Requires a strong background in the utility business and Meter Data Management systems to become familiar with the inherent factors and problems influencing the energy industry. Requires a background that allows for broad thinking and high analytical and reasoning skills. Requires project management skills to effectively complete work objectives/projects on time.
  • Requires computer skills and demonstrated experience in the review of vast amounts of information, breaking it down, prioritizing and synthesizing several related trends to determine relevant impact within the IESO.
  • Requires good customer service skills.
A period of over 8 years, up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Oakville, ON location.
