Job Description

The Technical Specialist is accountable for collaborating with Laboratory physicians, scientists and managers to conduct research and develop and implement new technologies for the continued improvement of quality patient care and responsible for monitoring and recommending appropriate Transfusion Medicine product utilization. The Specialist incorporates new or improved processes that meet the legislation requirements for product utilization within Transfusion Medicine and will be responsible for the following; responsible for the maintenance of processes related product utilization within Transfusion Medicine; providing technical expertise in investigating and resolving technical and clinical problems; optimizing the provision of service by utilizing the available resources in an effective and efficient manner; consulting/liaising with various users and technologists regarding the legislation requirements related to processes for product utilization. In addition assists in coordinating the activities related to Ontario's Transfusion Transmitted Injuries Surveillance Program and provides education to staff for practical application of processes relating to product utilization. The Specialist maintains a high level of technical expertise, professional growth and development through literature reviews, professional associations, attending seminars and workshops, participates in production of scientific papers in support of research and education for publication and/or presentation at scientific meetings and develops and maintains a personal education program that supports continuing improvement in the role of the Technical Specialist.

Qualifications

1. Registered with the College of Medical Technologists of Ontario
2. ART in Immunohematology or BSc in a related Science
3. Minimum 5 (five) years current experience in Transfusion Medicine
4. Experience with regulatory requirements, and Health Canada surveillance programs
5. Thorough knowledge of blood and blood products and alternative therapies
6. Knowledge and experience with Quality Systems
7. Excellent communication skills
8. Proficiency in Excel or ACCESS
