Reporting to the Director of Public Health Surveillance & Informatics, the Lead works closely with the Lead for Data Management and Quality Assurance to ensure data integrity, consistency, and alignment across multiple surveillance and epidemiology areas of responsibility. This collaboration helps maintain a cohesive and responsive surveillance ecosystem that supports public health decision-making. The Lead provides strategic oversight and technical guidance to a team of epidemiologists and data analysts, supporting their work in producing high-quality surveillance reports, outbreak summaries, and responses to data requests. This includes fostering cross-disease coordination and methodological standardization.
Description:
Provide strategic leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation of infectious disease surveillance systems across Alberta. Manage and mentor a team of epidemiologists and analysts, overseeing disease-specific surveillance areas including STBBIs, enteric illnesses, tuberculosis, respiratory viruses, and immunization. Lead the development and maintenance of surveillance protocols, ensuring alignment with provincial and national standards and consistency across programs. Direct literature reviews and environmental scans to identify emerging health threats and inform adaptive, evidence-based surveillance strategies. Oversee the production and dissemination of technical reports, surveillance dashboards, outbreak summaries, and stakeholder-specific presentations for AHS leadership and Alberta Health. Provide advanced analysis and interpretation of complex, multi-source data sets, including laboratory data, clinical records, and public health information systems. Champion high-quality epidemiological practices through mentorship, peer review, and the implementation of quality assurance and capacity-building initiatives. Collaborate with internal and external partners--including Alberta Health, academic institutions, and other provincial programs--to coordinate surveillance efforts and exchange best practices. Lead or support outbreak investigations by applying rigorous data collection methods, statistical analysis, and real-time reporting frameworks. Contribute to the development and refinement of performance indicators and evaluation frameworks to ensure continuous improvement of surveillance systems. Serve as a key advisor on strategic epidemiological matters, supporting timely, data-informed decisions in response to ongoing and emerging public health priorities.
