Summary:
Taza Development Corporation is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to provide legal expertise and strategic advice on commercial real estate matters. The Legal Counsel will play a critical role in supporting Taza's vision of sustainable, innovative, and culturally grounded development on Tsuut'ina Nation lands. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of commercial real estate law, Indigenous land development, and corporate legal frameworks.

Key Responsibilities :
Legal Advisory & Transaction Support
Provide expert legal advice on all aspects of commercial real estate transactions, including acquisitions, leases, joint ventures, financing, and land development agreements.
Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, leases, and other legal documents to ensure alignment with Taza Development Corporation's objectives.
Advise on land use, zoning, and regulatory compliance matters.
Support due diligence efforts for property leasing and partnerships.
Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with commercial real estate projects.
Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including Indigenous land frameworks and agreements.
Stakeholder Engagement
Collaborate with Tsuut'ina Nation leadership, legal counsel, and community stakeholders to ensure alignment with Nation priorities and legal protocols.
Engage with external legal counsel, regulatory authorities, and partners on development projects.
Negotiate agreements with commercial tenants, partners, and contractors.
Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including Indigenous land frameworks and agreements.
Dispute Resolution
Provide guidance on conflict resolution and dispute management related to commercial agreements and real estate projects.
Manage external legal counsel for litigation matters, as required.
Support alternative dispute resolution processes and community-based approaches.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited institution.
Member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta (or eligible for immediate registration).
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience practicing commercial real estate law, preferably with Indigenous land development experience.
Proven experience negotiating complex commercial real estate transactions.
Knowledge of Indigenous land tenure systems, land codes, and Indigenous self-governance agreements.
Excellent drafting, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
Strong understanding of corporate governance and regulatory frameworks.
Experience working with Indigenous communities is a strong asset.
Knowledge of Tsuut'ina Nation culture, protocols, and language is considered an asset.
Must have a valid class 5 drivers' license and daily access to your own vehicle.
