What's the job?

The Syndications Associate is responsible for day to day portfolio management activities, including evaluating, underwriting, and managing subordinated debt and senior debt syndications for existing and new opportunities, with a particular focus on the agency function. Through in-depth research on financing opportunities and performing due diligence, together with ongoing business account management, this position plays a supporting role in the development and growth of a high quality portfolio of investment opportunities for Coast Capital Savings. In addition to being familiar with various areas of commercial banking & risk management: 1) individuals are able to independently review, analyze, and underwrite new and existing opportunities for Coast Capital Savings; and 2) have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, at all levels throughout the enterprise. Estimated time spent on various responsibilities is as follows: 100% portfolio and risk management.

What you'll get to do:

  • Provide effective risk monitoring and control of a portfolio of business clients through timely completion of annual and other credit reviews and ongoing monitoring of accounts.
  • Independently evaluate, structure, and underwrite subordinated debt and senior debt syndication opportunities.
  • Perform financial analysis and modelling to forecast and monitor operating and financial results.
  • Service the on-going needs of borrowers and liaise with internal staff, particularly Relationship Teams, Commercial Lending Operations and Commercial Credit and external counsel as required.
  • Maintain portfolio performance tracking, preparing reports and presentations, as required.
  • Maintain a professional standard of conduct at all times while promoting a positive image of the enterprise.
  • Maintain compliance with all audit and risk management requirements and all other internal policies.
  • Provide effective risk monitoring and control of portfolio limits and geographic exposure limits.
  • Assist with multi-lender deal arrangements including drafting Confidential Information Memorandums & pitch materials, financial modeling, book running and deal structuring.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Keep current with changes to policies, procedures and processes, trends in commercial banking, credit, and regulatory issues that may have an adverse impact on Coast Capital Savings.
  • Develop strong relationships with our internal and external business partners and work cooperatively with others.
  • Foster team collaboration to provide a superior support structure for deal activities and the agency function.
  • Create an environment that encourages new concepts and challenges convention.
Who are we looking for?
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant Commercial Banking experience, including experience in either: accounting/auditing, commercial banking, corporate finance, investment banking, and/or other relevant areas within a financial institution environment. Knowledge of general commercial banking and an understanding of credit agreements and other legal documents.
  • Bachelor's Degree or a diploma requiring 3 - 4 years of full-time study.
  • Knowledge of Canadian commercial banking marketplace.
  • Strong credit analysis, communications, presentation, analytical risk and portfolio management abilities.
  • Knowledge of the Coast Capital Savings Corporate Lending Policy, Lending Guidelines, the Commercial Lending Manual and Commercial Lending Operations.
  • Good knowledge of the competitive environment and trends for commercial underwriting and risk management practices.
  • Applied knowledge of financial modeling at a proficient level, including the ability to create integrated financial models designed to identify key assumptions and the performance of sensitivity analysis on these areas.
  • Ability to work with all levels from front line staff to senior executives.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent ability to make sound decisions based on thorough research and analysis.
  • Ability to see the big picture and manage the details.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, including ability to manage multiple projects and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to articulate and effectively communicate with executive, management and staff.
  • Excellent problem solving, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Proven ability to develop win/win solutions through innovative and strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong work ethic and demonstrated resourcefulness in execution of daily activities to meet deadlines and establish priorities to manage multiple priorities, with limited supervision.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel to where members are located across Canada.
