SW Infrastructure Development for Video Encoder HW designs

ASIC/Silicon Design Member of Technical Staff position

THE ROLE:

If you have strong software development skills, have an interest in how hardware works, and getting the opportunity to work on & develop the SW infrastructure that represents the low-level software/hardware interface and enables verifying that all functionality of the video encode HW design is functioning correctly, then this is a great opportunity for you. It is a fast paced, exciting environment involving continuous learning, creativity, with lots of room for growth & developing new skills.

We are looking for an experienced engineer with at least 5 years of experience of software development experience to fill an ASIC/Silicon Member of Technical Staff position within the Multimedia Video Hardware solutions team at AMD. This is a position at the AMD Markham site, just outside Toronto.

We expect you to bring strong software coding skills, with "real-world" SW development experience, a strong grasp of applying structured software (SW) design to new development & the know how to develop maintainable SW architectures that can be easily extended as needs evolve. Object oriented C++ will be the primary vehicle for development of new code & re-imagining of existing SW code.

The role will require the candidate to initially acquire background knowledge of how a video encoder HW design, AMD's VCN IP, functions (inputs, outputs, data flow, and processing) and the interactions & communication between HW, firmware (FW), and SW layers that enables the overall end-user solution. You will learn how the video encode HW design is validated for correct functionality & how video encode algorithms are developed & qualified, evolving from an initial HW model into the actual silicon HW design. As part of a solution HW design verification team, with guidance and input from highly experienced mentors, you will develop new object oriented infrastructure that manipulates raw video pixel data to enable testing real-world video encode usecases & high-value custom HW encode features to prove correct functionality & show that the HW design matches expectations.

You will learn the low-level details of how video encoding works, how to validate video codec algorithms and HW implementations, and how to prove that the HW functions properly. In addition, you may work with relevant firmware (FW) engineers to add interface support & functionality for testing different aspects of new & existing HW functionality & complete HW IP solution validation. Finally, you may collaboratively consult & debug with HW designers & SW FW & driver developers on the final VCN HW IP solution & its interactions with the SW driver layers to ensure your framework reflects real-world HW+SW system functionality.

THE PERSON:

  • 5+ years of software development experience
  • At least 3 years of strong object oriented principles based SW development experience
  • A desire to learn the "big picture" of hardware+software and then dive into the details and apply this to low-level implementation
  • An organized, enthusiastic self-motivated individual with a strong interest in understanding how hardware works & how to test and validate complex hardware designs
  • Ability to learn concepts quickly and apply what you learn in unique ways to new situations
  • Be a self-starter in driving tasks to completion
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work in a multi-discipline team and global setting as a solution enabler
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in the re-architecture of SW infrastructure & libraries used to develop pre-silicon HW functional test scenarios to validate HW designs work properly.
  • Work with the other HW design verification team members to explore new HW and solution (HW+SW) features, understand how they are tested & validated & collaborate to develop new SW test infrastructure enabling verification of these HW features
  • Leverage or adapt test libraries, and test cases from existing video encoder IP.
  • Develop test cases and complete hands-on testing, debug, and validation of all functionality using these tests on both a HW model & the actual HW design
  • Develop, adapt, and verify IP performance tests to ensure real-world performance usecase targets are met
  • Work with the ASIC HW teams (Designers, FW and SW) to debug & solve test failures at block IP & end-to-end HW levels
  • Automate and improve test suite efficiency
  • Achieve goal of full functional coverage of testing the HW features
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Strong C/C++ object oriented coding experience on "real-world" solutions
  • A strong grasp of object oriented concepts and applying them to developing frameworks for leveraging code reuse
  • Hands-on object oriented software development experience.
  • Experience on larger software development projects where functional requirements and needs evolve over time & initial development of a skeleton framework that can anticipate such needs & easily adapt to satisfy such needs
  • Experience debugging challenging issues and root cause analysis
  • An understanding of hardware principles including hardware parallelism
  • Some familiarity of video codecs such as H.264/AVC & H.265/HEVC, and AV1
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
  • Minimum BSc Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent degree
