About Us

The Department of Agriculture is partnering with several Provincial Departments in the Truro/Bible Hill area for 11 Summer Student Positions under the Black Youth Planting Their Future Program. What Will You Do

You will work as part of a team of professionals to help provide services to Nova Scotians. You will explore and learn about the Department you are working in, which could include serving the public, interacting with industry members, research activities, coordination of meetings or events. You may also have the opportunity learn about the other departments in the Civil Service.

Remote/In-person: These positions are typically In-Person, however remote options maybe available in certain roles.

Additional Information

This competition is restricted to Youth that are African Nova Scotian or of African Descent in Grades 11, 12 or enrolled in post secondary studies for September 2023

Students are asked to identify their preferred positions based on the positions listed.

Students are asked to identify if they require transportation assistance.

Summary of Positions Available

1. Department of Agriculture - Crown Lending Agencies \xe2\x80\x93 You will work as part of a team of professionals to help clients and build the Nova Scotia agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture industries. You will explore and learn about the Lending, Risk, and Financial teams within Crown Lending.

2. Department of Agriculture - Crop & Livestock Insurance Commission \xe2\x80\x93 You will work as part of a team of professionals to help clients build a strong and resilient agriculture industry in Nova Scotia. You will explore and learn about insurance, crop production, accounting, premium rate calculations, and other business risk management tools.

3. Department of Agriculture - Policy \xe2\x80\x93 You will work in an office environment with a team of professionals that support the operations of the Department of Agriculture. Your work in the Policy and Corporate Services division may include employee engagement activities, records management, and research.

4. Department of Agriculture \xe2\x80\x93 Resource Sustainability \xe2\x80\x93 You will work in an office environment with a team of professionals that support the upgrades to the Provincial Dykeland System. Your work in the Resource Sustainability division may include review of historical files, field data collection, records management, and research.

5. Department of Agriculture -Sector Development \xe2\x80\x93 You will explore and learn about the work Sector Development does within the Department of Agriculture. You will be working on special youth initiatives that will include the development of a youth mentorship program.

6. Natural Resources & Renewables \xe2\x80\x93 Integrated Resource Management \xe2\x80\x93 You will be working alongside two students who are studying Natural Resources Management at either the University or Technical College level. As a Forest Resource Worker, you may be involved in timber cruising, harvest and road inspections, silviculture treatment monitoring, wildlife habitat and watercourse site inspections, wildlife surveys, forest research, forest inventory, tree improvement and extension related activities.

7. NS Department of Fisheries & Aquaculture \xe2\x80\x93 You will work with our Aquatic Animal Health Unit staff to support the provision of veterinary and laboratory services in the provinces aquaculture sector. In your role with our team, you will participate in the development of the aquaculture sector by supporting the delivery of veterinary and laboratory services through provincial regulatory programs.

8. Department of Justice \xe2\x80\x93 You will assist the divisions within the department in ensuring equity, diversity, and inclusion. You will help to develop events and activities that will engage staff on EDI and participate and contribute to the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group and sub-committee meeting.

9. Service Nova Scotia & Internal Services \xe2\x80\x93 As a Customer Service Representative assistant, you will complete some of the motor vehicle transactions and provide quality service to our individual and business customers and you will assist other Customer Service Representatives in their tasks.

10. Department of Community Services (Truro or Amherst) \xe2\x80\x93 Child Youth Family Support and Disability Support Program - You will take notes during meetings and add to software system. You will be required to gather information required by Social Workers, Family Support, and Care Coordinators and accompany employees on home visits or at Service Providers as deemed necessary.

11. Department of Community Services (Truro or Amherst) \xe2\x80\x93 Employment Support, Income Assistant & Administrative Support Assistant \xe2\x80\x93 You will assist with caseload maintenance tasks and complete filing and records retention. You will provide coverage of front reception area and interact with the public as well as doing data entry and spreadsheets.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $14.90 - $23.13 Bi-Weekly
