Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change\'s role is to protect the environment, human health and animal health through regulatory excellence, conservation, partnership and promotion. To achieve this, we strive to develop legislation, regulations and policies, process notifications, applications, and approvals for regulated activities based on sound scientific knowledge and expertise.

Our goal is to educate, inspect and enforce to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations. We also proactively respond to environmental, conservation, animal, and human health risks and work to develop programs and deliver services to enhance protection in these areas.

About Our Opportunity

Working in the Climate Change Mitigation & Carbon Pricing Team, you will support the implementation of provincial commitments on climate change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to build a more sustainable and resilient province. You will work within a diverse team of professionals and will support various projects. The primary focus will include supporting the delivery of the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund, while other duties may include supporting the team on climate mitigation policy.

Primary Accountabilities

In this position, you will be under the general supervision of the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund Coordinator. Your primary accountabilities will include:

  • Playing a key role in providing program administration support to the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund which may include program design, engaging with stakeholders, and preparing briefing notes.
  • Evaluating the fund\'s performance and progress to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Preparing presentations, reports, and other materials for senior leadership.
  • Support senior staff on policy/program development by conducting jurisdictional scans or other analysis of climate change mitigation programs .
  • Occasionally, you will collaborate with other divisions whose policies, and programs intersect with our mandate.
This position may perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

To be eligible for this position, you must be a full-time post-secondary student enrolled in any of the following fields: Environmental Sciences, Public Administration, Communications, or Business, and returning to studies in the fall of 2024. Knowledge of provincial and federal climate change policies, programs and plans is considered an asset.

Candidates should clearly indicate in their resume any completed course work and/or experience related to: climate change mitigation/adaptation, project/operations management, market research, communications, public relations/engagement, and/or policy analysis.

In addition to the above, the below will be key for success within the position:
  • Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to share ideas with colleagues.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organization, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Possesses problem solving skills and has strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong research and critical thinking abilities.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams.
Additional Information

Please note, this is a summer student position with an end date of August 30, 2024. Candidates must be enrolled in a full time undergraduate or graduate course and be returning in the Fall of 2024 or the next semester.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $19.13 - $28.26 Hourly
