Job Summary:
The position offers hands-on experience to a post-secondary student enrolled in art history, visual arts, or art education, who may be interested in pursuing a career in the Canadian Arts & Culture sector. This experience will allow students to develop critical skills needed to work within art and museum institutions, specifically in the areas of Education and Arts Administration. This position will enhance and bolster student\xe2\x80\x99s understanding of gallery exhibitions and public programming operations of a non-profit, public, cultural institution.

Under the primary supervision, and guidance of the Public Programs Coordinator and the Summer Camp Director, the Summer Camp Administrator will play a vital role in the smooth operation of a nine-week, arts-based summer camp for children ages of four to twelve.

  • Key duties and responsibilities
  • The Summer Camp Program Administrator will attend and complete all required training provided by the City of Markham and the Varley Art Gallery
  • Assist in summer camp staff recruitment, and onboarding; develop and facilitate training to new staff, and City of Markham volunteers
  • Coordinate staff schedules, maintain timecards, and effectively respond to summer camp staff inquires
  • Assist in program development including art lessons and gallery exhibition tours that are flexible, age appropriate and adaptable for children living with special needs; work one-on-one with City of Markham integration specialist
  • Research best practices in gallery and museum settings putting into them into practice to ensure high quality programs, and positive visitor experiences are maintained
  • Prioritize the health and safety of campers and gallery patrons
  • Develop communications, including promotional material, for participants\' caregivers
  • Assist with the design, creation and installation of a camp-wide project to celebrate children\'s artwork
  • Sonduct informal and formal evaluations for staff and plan staff and volunteer appreciation events
  • Coordinate art materials; ordering, receiving, inventory, preparing supplies for camps etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Pursuing post-secondary education in visual arts, arts administration, art history, education or related field
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional customer service skills
  • Proven leadership abilities
  • Familiarity with Microsoft, Microsoft Office including Excel and Outlook, Google Drives, etc.
  • High Five Certificate in Principles of Healthy Childhood Development
  • First Aid CPR-C level certification
  • A clear vulnerable sector screen check
  • Fluency in English; Mandarin and/or Cantonese language an asset
  • Must be eligible for Young Canada Works programs; must accept full term from June to the beginning of September
