Established in 1975, the Grimsby Public Art Gallery is a non-profit public art gallery,
featuring exhibitions of contemporary artwork and a wide range of art classes and workshops for
both children and adults, school tours and special events.

The Portfolio

Reporting to the Art Gallery Manager/Curator, the Curatorial Assistant is responsible for working
with the GPAG Permanent Collection and temporary art exhibitions at the gallery. The primary
goals of the position are to research and update information about works in the collection for
inclusion in the collection database, and to present information about the collection and exhibited
artworks to the visiting public. Tasks will include examining and inventorying artwork; research to
develop accurate content for collection files; preparing artwork for exhibition; and preparing
relevant educational material for public presentation.

Please note this position is subject to grant approval.

The Candidate

As a candidate for this position, you are currently enrolled in a degree or diploma program
specializing in Fine Arts, Art History or Cultural Studies with a specific interest in gallery work.
You have a good understanding of art history and possess the ability to recognize different art
media. You are organized, meticulous and have an attention to detail.

The Town of Grimsby offers candidates for this position $16.31 per hour (Band 1, 2023 rates).

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Collections (40%)

1.1 Inventory, examine and clean artwork from Art in the Schools program. Update
information panels as necessary for 1.2 Inventory and examine artwork in collection confirming location, examining
physical condition, assessing accuracy and completeness of existing records in
Past Perfect database 1.3 Research and update information in the Past Perfect collection database, including
confirming artist information such as birth & death dates, donor & exhibition
records, documentation of exhibition and copy right permissions as applicable 1.4 Write accessible descriptions of artwork for use in future digital display
1.5 Propose artwork for end of year collection exhibition and ensure that pieces selected by the Curator are prepared for display

2. Programming (25%)

2.1 Uses the research and information on select collection pieces to prepare and
present virtual or in-person illustrated talks for the public 2.2 Uses information and analysis of the current exhibition to prepare and present in-
person or virtual exhibition tours 2.3 Writes brief articles about collection pieces and/or the current exhibition for
publication in the gallery newsletter, website, and social media

3. Exhibition (20%)

3.1 Prepares information provided by guest curator of fall exhibition for brief promotional write ups, labels and text panels
3.2 Supports exhibition change at end of summer by helping with de-installation and return of artwork, preparation of gallery walls and unpacking and installation of new
work

4. Other (15%)

4.1 Supports Art Gallery staff with special events including set-up and take down,
presentation of activities, providing information to public 4.2 Serves customers and processes gift shop sales; answers phones; welcomes

4.3 Works in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety
Act, associated regulations, other applicable legislation, Town by-laws, policies,
procedures, and guidelines. 4.4 Other related duties, as assigned.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

Some recent related experience.
