Job Description

The employment period generally runs from the beginning of September to the end of April (for an 8 month work term).

Health and Safety Student
The Safety, Security & Emergency Preparedness Department at the Historic Waste Program Management Office of CNL provides direct safety expertise to our offices and waste water treatment plants (WWTP) as well as contractor safety oversight for Canada\xe2\x80\x99s largest environmental remediation currently underway in the Municipalities of Port Hope and Port Granby.

The student in this position will have an opportunity to participate in safety inspections and audits of large, civil construction projects as well as small scale remediation, and work within two separate waste water treatment plants. He/she will be working with experienced safety professionals with a large variety of previous experience which will allow them to grow their skills in this field

What you will be doing!

  • Perform basic industrial hygiene testing and sampling under the guide of a CIH
  • Prepare reports on activities as required
  • Complete Job Hazard Assessments
  • Develop and deliver safety presentations
  • Conduct safety inspections and oversight visits at various workplaces
  • Track and monitor inspection and observations utilizing various spreadsheets and custom software
  • Gather OHS data through interviews and/or field observation
  • Update procedures and program documents
  • Other duties as assigned
What we are looking for:
Applicants should be near the end of their program in Occupational Health and Safety or related majors, preferably with some prior work experience in the environmental remediation field. Excellent knowledge of health and safety regulations and fundamentals is an asset. Some knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and equipment would be beneficial. Good communications skills are essential as are interpersonal skills. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications also needed.

Note: In order to be eligible for a CNL student work term, the student MUST be enrolled to return to school following, OR the work term is required to complete a program/graduate.

Roughly 100kms East of Toronto, Port Hope is located at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in the west end of Northumberland County. Basically, still close enough to the \xe2\x80\x9cBig City\xe2\x80\x9d without all the hassle of being in the \xe2\x80\x9cBig City\xe2\x80\x9d.

As a leader in environmental remediation at nuclear and radiologically contaminated sites, CNL is implementing the on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. The cleanup of historic Low Level Radioactive Waste by CNL in the communities of Port Hope and Port Granby in Ontario is a demonstration of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to the safe, long-term storage and management of nuclear waste.
