Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application.Under the direction of the Manager, Traffic Services & Road Safety, the Student Engineering Assistants will assist in a unique variety of traffic and transportation engineering tasks. These include safety, operations and design components to manage the overall transportation network in HRM.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct site visits to perform field inspections and scoping exercises.
  • Support street-lighting design and review.
  • Review collision data, perform road safety reviews and make recommendations for road safety improvements.
  • Provide support to manage ongoing road safety related programs (traffic calming, neighborhood speed limit reductions, etc.)
  • Assess traffic control requests, analyzing traffic data for safety improvements, and coordinating the implementation of approved traffic regulations.
  • Review and comment on transportation related items within development applications.
  • Engage in various traffic studies and support special transportation-related projects.
  • Other duties and special project assignments.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
  • Must be enrolled in an engineering or engineering technology co-op program with successful completion of first year and intention of returning to full time studies upon completion of the work-term.
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of computers with demonstrated experience using spreadsheets and computer software such as Excel and MSWord.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or other design software is considered an asset.
  • Experience with GIS systems (such as ArcGIS) or willingness to learn GIS mapping tools to support traffic management tasks.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret traffic data and perform calculations.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new software and technologies to perform job duties effectively.
  • An interest in the area of traffic/transportation engineering (previous course work or experience in this area would be considered an asset);
  • Driver\'s License valid in the Province of Nova Scotia.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle for use for work is considered an asset (any personal vehicle use related to the position will be compensated for under the HRM mileage policy);
