The Dean of Students\xe2\x80\x99 supports all students on the university\xe2\x80\x99s numerous campuses and so must employ creative strategies to meet the diverse needs of a large student population.PositionReporting to the Manager and working collaboratively with the Student Life Team in the Office of the Dean of Students, the Student Conduct Officer is jointly responsible for making decisions under the student Conduct Policy (SCP) and the Student Academic Integrity Policy (SAIP) in accordance with the goal of maintaining the safety and integrity of the University Community.Mandated by GFC policy, the SCA ensures that violations of the above policies are appropriately investigated and sanctioned when warranted for all University of Alberta campuses. Addressing highly visible and sensitive matters, the SCA must balance the safety of the community with the goal of student development and learning. A substantial component of SCA\xe2\x80\x99s role is to mitigate, manage and prevent significant risks to the University\xe2\x80\x99s reputation, as well as the risk of judicial review of discipline decisions and other civil litigation against the University.SCA also works with the Student Life Team to provide needs-based, complainant driven non-disciplinary accountability options, such as restorative practices, voluntary educational measures, and other facilitated alternatives to policy complaints.Finally, SCA engages in prevention and promotion in an effort to prevent policy violations. Major areas of responsibility include investigating and applying sanctions on policy violations; designing and facilitating community accountability options; providing educational workshops and seminars to students, TAs and instructors regarding the policy, restorative justice, sexual assault and other topics; awareness of policies and procedures to students, Faculties, Departments, and other interested parties; outreach to the wider community; and providing internal, provincial, national and international leadership in various areas of student conduct.Duties

  • Investigate and make discipline decisions under the SCP and SAIP
  • Meet with complainants, accused students, advisors and lawyers, witnesses and victims of policy violations
  • Be able to adhere to and clearly explain University processes when criminal lawyers and other external advisors become involved
  • Receive procedural and legal requests and make decisions on process
  • Maintain the integrity of the University\xe2\x80\x99s processes when criminal or other processes occur simultaneously
  • Generate independent, arm\xe2\x80\x99s length discipline decisions, including written summary of allegations, description of investigation, decision on whether the student was responsible for the offence(s) as charged, and impose appropriate sanction(s) in accordance with policies, including reasons, based on the requirements of administrative law
  • Ensure procedural fairness and transparency to reduce the risk of litigation, judicial review, and reputational risk
  • Provide advice and guidance to Associate Deans, Directors and other members of the University Community regarding discipline cases Connect students to on-campus resources, including the Office of the Student Ombuds, the Sexual Assault Centre, Helping Individuals At Risk (HIAR) and Counseling and Clinical Services
  • Maintain confidentiality according to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) Act, balanced with the often competing requirements of procedural fairness under Administrative Law
  • Working closely with the Student Life team, identify and provide opportunities for non-disciplinary accountability when a Code complaint is unsuitable, undesirable, or does not address the needs of the complainant
  • Design process according to the needs of the person(s) harmed, potential for positive resolution, and team capacity
  • Participate in campus activities, such as student and teacher orientations
  • Respond to questions from students, instructors and other community members on the Code
  • In collaboration with the Manager, identify other issues of student conduct, which can be addressed through preventative programs
  • In collaboration with the Manager, coordinate with other University units to provide educational programming and/or educational sanctions
  • Provide training, workshops or informational sessions through various units to faculty, staff, and TAs on issues related to student conduct, restorative justice, and sexual assault
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a bachelor\'s degree
  • At least three years of related experience in a related field (e.g., student affairs, psychology, business administration).
  • Ability to synthesize and conceptualize complex situations
  • Ability to deal with a high degree of ambiguity
  • Ability to effectively communicate sensitive and/or complex material
  • Solid understanding of the effects of trauma on complainants, witnesses and/or respondents
  • High level of critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated decision-making ability in the face of adversity; ability to analyze possible courses of action and determine strengths and possible consequences of each course of action before making a decision
  • Ability to perform in high-stress situations, maintaining equilibrium when dealing with lawyers, parents and distressed students
  • Skilled in conflict management, conflict resolution and mediation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the various areas within the University community, its policies and procedures (GFC, Code of Student Behaviour, Student Conduct Policy, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy, Student Academic Integrity Policy, UAPPOL, Residence Community Standards, Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate policy, Helping Individuals at Risk policy, FOIPPA, etc)
  • Experience in providing specialized student conduct support, adjudicating conduct decisions, restorative justice, etc...
  • Specialized training in investigation and quasi-legal processes, with a strong understanding of procedural fairness and administrative law
  • Trained and skilled in restorative practices and/or other community accountability processes
