Job Description


The Campus Peer Support program is a nation-wide pilot project, funded by Health Canada and managed by Canadian Mental Health Association - National Office. The local pilot is co-managed by the UPEI Department of Student Affairs and CMHA - PEI Branch. Campus Peer Support Workers will be trained and expected to provide regular peer support - both walk-in and by appointment - to students on campus. Peer Support Workers will report to, and be supported by, both a member of Student Affairs and PEI CMHA teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be part of a team of individuals who:

  • Participate in a 2-week training program
  • Draw on their personal lived experience, as well as their training to facilitate informal, drop-in small group discussions
  • Draw on their personal lived experience, as well as their training to facilitate brief one on one supportive conversations with individuals struggling with mental health and addictions or in supporting someone living with same
  • Attend weekly team meetings
  • Participate in monthly in-service training
  • Progress reports to Coordinator/ Lead student mentor
  • Keep shift records and document situations requiring follow-up
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Self-motivated student with second year standing or higher (exceptional, mature first year applicants may be considered)
  • Lived experience with mental health or substance use problems, or in support of a family member or loved one
  • Stable in their recovery
  • Strong communication and support skills
  • Able to operate in a non-judgmental fashion in an emotionally charged environment while maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Student centered, dependable and reliable
  • Lived experience as a part of or in support of underrepresented populations is an asset
  • Training is mandatory and candidates must be available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6pm-9pm for the period of Aug 21/23 - Sept 1/23
