Recruitment range: $77,064- $84,968 starting salary determined by the PEA

Performance range: starting salary to max of $100,235 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Vice President Research and Innovation (VPRI) portfolio includes the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation (OVPRI), Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI), Office of Research Services, Animal Care Services, Research Partnerships Office, and responsibility for UVic research centres and research entities. The OVPRI provides guidance for UVic\'s research agenda at the institutional level, including setting strategic research priorities and developing initiatives to support research to ensure that UVic research continues to grow and prosper. The OVPRI staff support the VPRI, Associate Vice-Presidents Research and all of the activities of the portfolio to accomplish the missions and goals set out in the University strategic plan and individual unit plans.

Reporting to the Director SRI (DSRI), the Strategic Project Officers (SPOs) work with the VPRI Executive team to develop and implement strategic initiatives related to research, facilitate internal and external research capacity building, and enhance the university\'s research profile. This role is a key enabler of research strategy within UVic, requiring demonstration of leadership, prioritization, creative solution finding, as well as collaboration with researchers and key members of the OVPRI management and the UVic and external community. The SPOs work closely and collaboratively with other staff in OVPRI and ORS.

Responsibilities include: developing and implementing project plans for research initiatives that support the Research and Creative Works Strategy; managing the development of research networks and clusters at UVic; coordinating the strategy for major institutional research proposals; planning and organizing stakeholder meetings; providing regular summary and detailed progress reports to DSRI; writing reports; conducting research and analysis; and assisting with activities that advance the university rankings and reputation.

Job Requirements

Graduate degree in a related field (health, science, engineering, social sciences, humanities, arts). Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience in post-secondary or health research institutions. Equivalent combinations of education, training and/or experience may be considered.

Experience must include:
  • Expert knowledge of research management and/or administration in the post-secondary education sector;
  • Working and liaising in a multi-stakeholder environment related to research;
  • Project management, communication planning and project reporting;
  • Stakeholder engagement including developing and delivering initiatives that involve diverse stakeholders with competing needs;
  • Gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources;
  • Preparing clear and concise written material including reports, briefing materials;
  • Event organization and management;
  • Working with and providing advice to internal and external leadership personnel.
Skills and competencies must include:
  • Demonstrated, strong interpersonal skills in a collegial environment;
  • Demonstrated experience with engagement processes that exhibit the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion;
  • Ability to navigate conflict and engage in problem solving;
  • High level of confidentiality and professionalism, and ability to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy;
  • Self-motivated and self-directed with a willingness to take on new responsibilities and adapt, manage and facilitate change;
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to balance and manage multiple priorities;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and be adaptable to emerging and changing priorities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Skilled at building equitable relationships;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting and collaborating and negotiating with a broad range of people to achieve goals and objectives;
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory skills and the ability to inspire a team;
  • Advanced computer skills including - Microsoft Office suite including; Excel, Word, PowerPoint and project management software;
  • Working knowledge of and willingness to learn more about local Indigenous protocols and cultural practices.

  • Understanding of post-secondary research system across disciplines in BC, Canada and other jurisdictions.
  • Background in research skills, methodologies, program evaluation and academic disciplines.
