This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position Summary




Reporting to the Academic Department Manager and working closely with the Department Chair, the Strategic Initiatives Coordinator acts in multiple capacities to support our department in achieving its strategic mission. The ideal candidate will have a role in supporting research centers and institutes, as well as departmental initiatives, and day-to-day support of the department itself. The main focus will be on communications, technical writing and general administrative support.

With strong community engagement, interdisciplinary research, and a commitment to societal well-being, the faculty prepares students to lead in a rapidly evolving, global engineering landscape.Provides general administrative and strategic support to the department's centers and institutes. Supports communications for the centers, including development of promotional materials, website updates, and coordination of video content and social media updates. Support the development and implementation of new departmental initiatives and programs, such as a new internship program for graduate students, the mentorship program and the professional development workshop series. Drafting and editing tenure and promotion recommendation letters and award letters on behalf of the department Chair. Editing, writing, and coordinating grant proposals and other documents related to research projects. Editing highly technical documents to high standards, sometimes under tight deadlines. Assisting with preparing promotional material and marketing strategies for our graduate programs. Coordinates and edits website content, newsletters and social media stories for the department Support for departmental events, including open house and awards events. Supporting internal documentation and design of communications materials for external audiences. Undergraduate degree in engineering or natural sciences or equivalent, postgraduate degree preferred. An effective communicator, capable of determining how best to reach different audiences and execute communications based on that understanding. Minimum of 4 years of work experience, with 1 year of professional work experience in technical writing. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills; ability to multitask without losing attention to detail. Ability to manage timelines, to prioritize tasks, and to work under pressure during periods leading up to critical funding application deadlines. Moderate-to-high level computer skills with the ability to create visually appealing communications materials. Familiarity with the University of Alberta process and procedures. Familiarity with content management systems for websites. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Agile and adaptable; capable of shifting focus as priorities.
