Position Type / Hours:

Full-Time Permanent. Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, 35 hours weekly, plus overtime as required

Annual Compensation:

$ 50,652 to $66,926 commensurate with education, skills and experience.

Under the guidance of the Senior Psychologist and the supervision of the Speech-Language Pathologist the Speech-Language Assistant is essential in supporting students, educators, and families by enhancing their ability to meet the diverse needs of students facing articulation, language, and literacy challenges that impact learning, behaviour and social interactions. This role involves independently delivering targeted treatment to students with identified communication needs and literacy impairments. Additionally, the Speech-Language Assistant conducts screenings for articulation, voice quality, and fluency disorders in collaboration with Speech-Language Pathologists. By closely monitoring student progress and collaborating with Speech-Language Pathologists in assigned schools, the Speech-Language Assistant plays a crucial role in fostering the success of students within the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:



? Provide direct speech-language intervention through weekly in-person therapy sessions focused on language, literacy, articulation, and communication, following Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) guidance.

? Develop individualized therapy plans, materials, and visuals to support student learning in therapy sessions, classrooms, and at home.

? Support minimally verbal and nonverbal students by developing and implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools and strategies in collaboration with SLPs, teachers, educational assistants, and families.

? Maintain accurate and detailed clinical notes, documenting student progress in compliance with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) standards and board procedures.

? Conduct speech and language screenings for Junior Kindergarten students to identify those who may require referral for additional services.

? Participate in speech-language review meetings, contributing to progress updates and supporting collaborative planning with educators and families.

? Assist SLPs with report preparation, communication, scheduling, and delivery of progress reports.

? Attend meetings and maintain effective communication with SLPs, school staff, and families to support coordinated service delivery.

Required Skills and Qualifications:



? Undergraduate Degree and Communication Disorders Assistant Certificate or related field

? Up to 3 years experience as a Communication Disorders Assistant preferred

? Knowledge of Speech and Language Development: Understanding of typical and atypical speech and language milestones in school-aged children

? Assessment Techniques: Foundational knowledge of standardized assessments and screening tools used in speech-language pathology

? Therapeutic Approaches and Intervention Strategies: Proficiency in implementing therapeutic techniques (e.g., articulation therapy, language intervention) to address speech and language disorders in school-age children

? Technical Skills: Proficient in using clinical record-keeping software for documentation and reporting. Familiar with assistive technology and therapy-related applications (e.g., communication devices, speechlanguage apps). Competent in using digital tools to support teletherapy and remote learning.

? Data Collection: Ability to track and document client progress to inform treatment planning. Experience developing and applying data collection methods to evaluate intervention effectiveness.

? Behaviour Management Techniques: Knowledge of strategies to manage challenging behaviours during therapy sessions. Skilled in using positive behaviour support techniques to encourage student participation and engagement.

? Knowledge of Relevant Legislation: Understanding of regulations such as the Speech-Language Pathology Act, Regulated Health Care Professionals Act, and the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPPA).

? Effective Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly and build rapport with students, educators, and families.

? Experience Working with Children: Direct experience working with children, understanding their developmental needs and challenges.

? As travel within the Board's jurisdiction is a requirement of this position, candidates must possess a valid Driver's License and a vehicle
