Position:



The Speech and Language Assistant will support the Speech and Language Pathologist in providing speech therapy to students with speech, language, and communication disorders at Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig Elementary School. This role involves assisting in therapy sessions, implementing individualized plans, and collaborating with educators to foster communication development.

The position requires cultural sensitivity and the incorporation of Indigenous perspectives into the therapy process. The Speech and Language Assistant will work closely with students, teachers, and families to ensure that speech and language strategies are supportive of both educational and cultural needs, emphasizing the importance of the Anishinaabe language, traditions, and cultural practices.

Requirements:



EDUCATION:

High school diploma required; post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field (e.g., Speech and Language Assistant, Communication Disorders Assistant, or Early Childhood Education) preferred. Certification or training in speech and language support is an asset.

EXPERIENCE

:

Previous experience working with children, particularly in a school or therapeutic setting, is preferred. Familiarity with speech and language disorders and therapeutic techniques is an asset. Experience working with Indigenous children and families is highly valued, and knowledge of the Anishinaabe language and culture is a significant asset.

SKILLS & EFFORT REQUIREMENTS

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and educators. Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with a Speech and Language Pathologist. Knowledge of culturally sensitive practices and an understanding of Indigenous language revitalization efforts. Patience, empathy, and the ability to support students from diverse backgrounds. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

OTHER

Must possess a valid Ontario Driver's License and have dependable transportation. Will be subject to a Vulnerable Sector Check. To present a positive role model, the candidate must live an addiction-free lifestyle. Valid First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Responsibilities:



Assist in Therapy Sessions:

Support the Speech and Language Pathologist during individual and group therapy sessions, implementing exercises and activities to enhance students' speech and language development.

Implement Individualized Plans:

Help execute individualized treatment plans for students with speech, language, and communication challenges, integrating culturally appropriate methods that respect Indigenous language and customs.

Monitor and Document Progress:

Track student progress, maintain accurate records, and report observations to the Speech and Language Pathologist, ensuring that cultural considerations are incorporated into progress reports.

Collaborate with Educators and Families:

Work closely with teachers, educational assistants, and families to integrate speech and language strategies into classroom activities, promoting cultural respect in communication development.

Support IEP Development:

Assist in the creation and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) that reflect students' unique needs, including culturally relevant goals and support strategies.

Promote Communication Development:

Encourage students to express themselves through both oral and written forms, emphasizing the value of Anishinaabe storytelling traditions, language revitalization, and cultural expression.

Cultural Sensitivity in Practice:

Ensure that speech and language interventions respect and incorporate Indigenous culture, traditions, and perspectives. This includes being mindful of the community's connection to the land, family, and spirituality, and integrating these cultural aspects into therapy sessions when possible.

Maintain Confidentiality:

Ensure all student information and records are handled with the utmost confidentiality and in accordance with privacy regulations and school policies.

Assist with Group Sessions and Activities:

Support group therapy sessions and assist in integrating culturally relevant activities into the therapy process.

The Speech and Language Assistant will be expected to work in a culturally responsive manner that acknowledges and integrates Indigenous values and beliefs. The successful candidate will demonstrate respect for the cultural heritage of the community, including an understanding of the importance of oral traditions and storytelling in Anishinaabe culture. The role will include encouraging students to connect with their heritage and language while supporting their communication development.

Working Conditions:



Work Environment:

Primarily school-based, with therapy conducted in classrooms, resource rooms, and during individual or small group sessions. Interaction with students, teachers, parents, and community members.
Schedule:

Full-time hours, Monday to Friday, during regular school hours. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for meetings, training, or school events.
