Who we are

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province's power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province's electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario's electricity needs - now and into the future.

The Opportunity

The Corporate Technology Solutions (CTS) team is a highly technical team within the I&TS Business Unit accountable for the design, build, maintenance and operations of physical and virtual server, and database infrastructure supporting IESO's key business solutions including cloud-based corporate messaging and collaboration solutions. The team also plays a key role in I&TS projects that traverse multiple business units within the organization.

What you'll do * Provide in depth technical expertise in the areas of Linux and Windows Administration, Microsoft365 Administration (Exchange and Teams), server virtualization using VMWare, Network Administration and related technologies.

  • Coordinate and execute Project tasks according to established Project Management processes, procedures, methods and standards in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Develop standards, participate in the development of strategic plans and provide operational and design specifications for application hosting infrastructure across all environments (i.e., QA, Sandbox, and Production).
  • Provide systems design expertise to support the development of computer based information systems/tools to meet the needs of IESO customers by establishing user requirements, developing system designs, integrating commercial products, code software and test systems. Provide project management support to design projects/teams or information systems or tools.
  • Design, build, and operate hosting systems which includes server and network components to deliver required system functions within the architectural principles of the IESO.
  • Manage the evolution of existing systems and tools by implementing enhancements to provide additional functionality, correct problems to improve reliability and maintainability and respond to advanced system problems or failures to restore system functionality.
  • Perform system administration duties, prepare and maintain procedures for support personnel involved in system administration activities.
  • Research commercial products and tools which can be used in the design or support of information systems and tools and perform ongoing assessments of their ability to meet current and future requirements.
  • Provide systems consulting and maintenance support to IT operations and software support staff.
  • Develop procedures required for the secure operation and management of information systems or tools. Perform hosting attestation to ensure compliance to set standards, meeting requirements, and identification of improvement opportunities.
  • Act as a consultant or mentor to peers to advance their learning and facilitate their problem solving skills with their respective areas of expertise.
  • Perform other duties as required.
What you'll need

Education:

Requires knowledge of Computer Science subjects and disciplines in order to develop and support small to large scale computer systems, storage and networks. Specific knowledge would include programming, system design, database modeling, networking and system administration. Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.

This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four year university education in the appropriate discipline or by having the equivalent level of education.

Experience:

Requires experience in the design, development and support of computer systems and infrastructure systems including:
  • Computer system architecture, design and integration
  • Administration and use of standard or proprietary computer operating systems (i.e., Linux, Windows)
  • Microsoft 365 Administration which includes Exchange Online and MS Teams
  • Development of automated scripts
  • Support of small to large scale computer systems
A period of up 8 years working in an infrastructure role in a large team environment is considered necessary to gain this experience.

  • Extensive design and administration knowledge of Linux and Windows Servers either on-premise or cloud-based.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and related applications.
