Job Description

The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district, and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross' comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.



Responsible for managing all Project site operations and logistics, ensuring that Exploration and Study activities in Red Lake and the project site are successful. Manage all local supporting functions, including HR, CR, Environment, Safety, and any Exploration operations and logistics (e.g. drilling activities, etc.). Work closely with the VP Project Director Great Bear, VP Exploration, and VP Resource & Mining Geology to ensure alignment on objectives and timelines. While some functions located locally or at Corporate may report to functional leads (e.g. Geology, Finance), your role will be to bind the entire team into one collective unit.

The role will be based at Kinross' Red Lake office.

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage all Red Lake operational and logistics activities.
  • Ensure the highest standards of safety are met, and that world-class safety programs are in place and continuously improved.
  • Ensure the operational success of drilling programs and Project study activities (e.g. baseline studies, geotechnical drilling, metallurgical drilling, etc).
  • The role will eventually broaden in scope to execute the construction of an exploration decline.
  • Build the capabilities of the team to enhance the site's ability to achieve financial and operating goals safely; hire appropriately, leverage the talents of the group, and take corrective action where necessary.
  • Formulate and/or oversee the execution of business practices at site to ensure alignment with Kinross organizational standards. Continue the work of building and maintaining functional standards in areas like Safety, Environmental compliance, and Community Relations. Work with direct reports and functional leads to ensure standards are in place, and audit mechanisms (e.g. reporting, visits, audits, etc.) are built and monitored.
  • Represent the site operations with internal stakeholders, advocating for the project and ensuring internal alignment.
  • Represent Kinross and the Project with local stakeholders, including the communities of Red Lake, Ear Falls, Wabauskang and Lac Seul. Act as a lead member of First Nations negotiations and relationship management alongside CR and Legal.
  • Work with the VPs Projects, Exploration, and Resource & Mining Geology to execute long-term strategies to develop and grow the Great Bear Project and to ensure Kinross meets its strategic objectives.
  • Work closely with VP Project Director for Great Bear to ensure the various needs of the Project studies (scoping, PFS, etc.) are being met by the site team. Provide input to any future expansion, collaborating with the Project team to ensure the success of the project and the transition to operations
  • Work closely with VP Exploration and VP Resource & Mining Geology to ensure the various needs of the annual drilling campaigns are being met by the site team. This will include helping to manage exploration drill contracts and contractors, working to debottleneck any inefficiencies or backlogs, actively advocating for the needs of the site team, etc.
  • Synchronize regularly with Corporate actors and departments, from 'clients' like Projects and Exploration, to support functions like Finance and Legal, to ensure that objectives, roles and responsibilities are clear and to manage conflicts or resource constraints as they arise. For example:
  • Work with the GBR Controller to create and manage budgets and long term plans
  • Work with site and Supply Chain to ensure operations have the resources they need
  • Investigate and execute on opportunities for continuous improvement across all functions
  • Identify strategies and key performance goals and act as an advisor and mentor to direct reports; works to overcome challenges and barriers and minimize risk.
  • Comply with federal and provincial acts and regulations, and legal requirements of the facilities.
  • Adhere to all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Competencies

Formal Education and Work Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, with a strong preference for Geology or Mine Engineering, or equivalent experience along with a minimum of 15 years' experience in the exploration and mining fields. Experience managing all aspects of exploration drilling campaigns, preferably in cold weather environments.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
  • Deep understanding of gold mine exploration operations and logistics.
  • Solid foundation in underground mining operations (related to the eventual exploration decline).
  • Solid foundation in provincial and federal legislation as it pertains to mining projects, including but not limited to agencies such as the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment Canada etc.
  • General knowledge of all phases of mining and milling operations.
  • General knowledge of aboriginal groups in Canada and more specifically in Ontario. Strong preference for present and/or past positive relationships with Ontario First Nations.
  • Strong project management abilities
  • Strong people skills, team building and management skills.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large audiences.
