Reporting to the Team Lead, Accessibility Suports, Interpreters working through Accessibility Services play an essential role in facilitating communication between D/deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people in a professional, competent, inclusive fashion utilizing a variety of communication modes. They providie and promote equitable access to information and communication where deafness might otherwise be a barrier. Interpreters at NorQuest are registered, experienced professionals with a deep understanding of Deaf culture who provide interpretation services to students and act as a field-specific resource to the college community.

HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE:





Demonstrating exceptional English language and ASL skills required to provide service in real-time, in-person, and online environments. Interpreting in classes and other contexts such as student meetings with instructors and other College or College-partner personnel, and College events. Preparating for interpreting: researching, requesting, and gathering information prior to interpreting; previewing materials, ensuring familiarity with contextually-relevant spoken, written, and signed vocabulary; consulting with participants before events; and developing deep understanding of situation-specific purpose, intent, and goals of participants/stakeholders. Collaborating with Interpreting team members to coordinate schedules and facilitate requests for interpreting, and acting as liaison with casual interpreters and other providers. Providing advance information and data relating to number, type, volume, frequency, complexity of interpreting needs for projections, budgeting, and staffing capacity-assurance. Keeping records and communicating service usage actuals, patterns, and other data for reporting purposes. Supporting Accessibility Services colleagues as required (e.g. support for other department functions, alternate format work, accommodated exams, etc.)

WHAT YOU BRING





Minimum of a 2-year diploma in Sign Language Interpretation, with a 3-year diploma or degree in Sign Language Interpretation preferred. ASLIA (Assocation of Sign Langugage Interpreters of Alberta) membership. 3 years full-time Sign Language Interpreting experience, with experience interpreting in a post-secondary environment preferred. Adherence to the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) Code of Ethics. CASLI (Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters) membership required as is adherence to the CASLI Code of Ethics.

Demonstrate active and consistent awareness of personal filters, intrapersonal factors, cultural interchanges, and reactions to a variety of situations and subject matter.




SALARY:

$54,041.90 - $70,239.40 annually, reflective upon what you bring AKA your education and experience. This is a full-time permanent position with immediate access to our great pension and benefit programs. This is an AUPE role, the AUPE Collective Agreement Appendix A outlines how pay is determined.
