Position Title: Shipping Foreman/Horticulture Technician Organization: Jplant Location: Napanee, Ontario Contract Duration: April 3rd 2023 to Nov 3rd 2023, seasonal Application Deadline: March 26th Hours: 40 hours per week Wage: $18.00 per hour Jplant is a propagation nursery located just north of the 401 in Napanee, Ontario. We propagate, grow, sell, and ship small plants in Canada. The types of plants we raise generally include perennials, ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs, fruit-bearing shrubs, and bamboo. We make all sales online and ship to clients thus there is no public customer relations on site. We are currently seeking a Shipping Foreman/Horticulture Technician to join our team. The primary role of the Foreman is supervising and managing a small team on shipping and packaging plant orders during shipping days. In the spring, we are shipping everyday for approximately 6 weeks. Following this spring period, we ship only 1-2 days a week. Every shipping day there is a new series of orders to pick up and package. Teams will pick up plants needed for the day\xe2\x80\x99s orders, gathering only the strongest, most suitable plants for sale. Then each order is dispatched and sent to the packaging team. Keeping each order separate and organized, the team will prepare orders by placing plants in plastic bags and building boxes, then packaging each plant in boxes with care so they are not damaged during shipping. All daily orders must be completed by the afternoon for delivery. This Shipping Foreman/Horticulture Technician will also assist with our everyday work for the remainder of the week. At different times of the year, we will be propagating plants through softwood cuttings, hardwood cuttings, and division as well as transplanting small plants and rooted cuttings into larger containers for future sales. Other daily duties will include watering, weeding, de-leafing, pruning, staking vines, and moving plants within the nursery. The ideal candidate for this position is a motivated, hard-working individual with an interest in horticulture and plant propagation. Additionally, having experience and a desire to be in a leadership role is vital for this position. Shipping can be a fast-paced environment which requires paying attention to many details to avoid making mistakes on orders. While the primary responsibility for this position will be to manage the shipping team, the successful candidate will be closely involved with all work done on site. This is an opportunity to learn best practices in plant propagation and greenhouse management as well as learn about over 1000 different plant species and varieties.   • Supervise packaging team

Qualifications
  • Education and/or experience in horticulture or a related field is an asset
  • Quick learner and able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Responsible and able to work independently
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a small team
  • Able to complete tasks efficiently and on schedule
  • Able to understand and follow directions exactly as given
  • Health and Safety awareness
  • Valid G class drivers license and access to a personal vehicle or able to arrange reliable transportation to the nursery (no public transportation available)
  • Fitness: A variety of tasks require workers to stay in one position over long periods of time: standing, kneeling, sitting. Able to safely lift 40lbs on occasion. Able to push carts. Able to possibly participate in small construction projects.
  • Ability to work outdoors in hot summer weather and rain.
