The Mustard Seed provides basic services xe2x80x93 food, clothing, and shelter, and is now increasing our support services xe2x80x93 health & wellness centers, education, and employment coaching, as well as permanent supportive housing to those living in poverty within Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.Position Type: Full time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Reporting to: Sr. Director of Shelter Operations
Location: Saskatoon, SKThe Shelter Manager upholds The Mustard Seedxe2x80x99s mission by maintaining a high level of professionalism and respect for all individuals who enter the space and live in the neighbourhood. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Shelter Operations, the Shelter Manager provides leadership and strategic planning for frontline operations. They are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Saskatoon shelter and leading the Saskatoon shelter teams, ensuring that individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty have access to basic services at our various shelter locations.This individual is an experienced social sector leader who brings humility, fosters positive relationships, and demonstrates excellence in their work. The position involves collaborating with other Mustard Seed program areas and external agencies to fulfill our mission and values. Additionally, the Shelter Manager will supervise staff recruitment, training, and performance management. Crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and coaching conversations are daily aspects of this role.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the Sr. Director Shelter Operations and organizational leadership to coordinate and facilitate Shelter programming that aligns with The Mustard Seed's mission and strategic objectives.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Shelter, HR, Health and Safety departments, other Mustard Seed programs, shelter leaders in other cities, local Fire Department, and businesses to foster effective communication and cooperation.
  • Prioritize and provide effective solutions to staff concerns and guest issues to ensure a positive and harmonious working environment.
  • Support HR designated duties, including assisting in the hiring process and providing support for employee relations.
  • Ensure staff receive proper training and orientation, regularly reviewing training materials to ensure their relevance and effectiveness.
  • Ensure that a Health and Safety Representative is appointed for the shelter.
  • Assist in facilitating Health and Safety meetings and addressing concerns promptly.
  • Participate in Health and Safety initiatives for The Mustard Seed organization.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures, promptly submitting incident reports through our safety software as required to help maintain a secure environment for all shelter participants and staff.
  • Plan and execute housing first programming that will engage our guests that offers fellowship, hope, and healing while moving out of homelessness to stable housing.
  • Oversee and support staff to effectively work with guests on housing options within the re-housing strategy and case management.
  • Collaborate with all program and service areas of The Mustard Seed to provide efficient and impactful referrals to benefit the guests.
  • Handle shelter-related guest grievances, conducting investigations, and engaging with staff when necessary to reach satisfactory outcomes.
  • Work with the Sr. Director Shelter Operations to maintain, develop, and evaluate all shelter policies, procedures, and budget.
  • Compile and propose the staffing budget, monitor variances throughout the fiscal year, prepare accurate expense reports, and recommend cost-saving techniques.
  • Assist the Sr. Director Shelter Operations in managing government relationships at the shelter, including yearly audits, check-ins, and daily reports. Attending appropriate meeting when required.
  • Collaborate with the Grant department to secure applicable grants and manage corresponding weekly reports and statistics.
  • Consult with the Sr. Director Shelter Operations on unbudgeted purchases, and provide monthly reports, including statistics, GIK, KPIs, concerns, successes, and program updates.
  • Ensure that clientsxe2x80x99 records and information are kept confidential, updated, and secure.
  • Approve timesheets and manage time-off requests in UKG.
  • Help coordinate and participate in special events and projects as directed by the Sr. Director Shelter Operations.
  • Facilitate and attend all mandatory meetings and activities.
LEADERSHIP
  • Create a positive and supportive team dynamic and act as a positive Mustard Seed Ambassador.
  • Lead the daily operations of the shelter, providing guidance and direction to the shelter team to ensure the effective execution of staff tasks and responsibilities.
  • Provide strong leadership and support to Shelter Team Leads, fostering their professional growth and promoting a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make well-informed decisions even in ambiguous or risky situations, relying on a combination of experience, data, and strategic thinking.
  • Exemplify the employment values of The Mustard Seed in all actions and interactions, becoming a role model for the team and reinforcing the organization's culture.
  • Provide spiritual guidance and support to the team, encouraging a sense of purpose and meaning in their work.
  • Actively foster an environment of collaboration and knowledge-sharing among team members, empowering them to contribute their unique perspectives and learn from one another.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Science, Human Services, Strategic Leadership, or a related field. Consideration may be given to candidates with a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the human services field, preferably with organizations focused on homeless services and/or poverty reduction/relief.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and leading staff for 3-5 years.
  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for client individuality and self-determination.
  • A broad knowledge of and experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills, with a proven track record of handling challenging situations and fostering positive outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, diverse environment, fostering cooperation among team members and stakeholders.
  • Strong crisis management skills, maintaining composure and sound decision-making under pressure.
  • Proven ability to network effectively and build strategic partnerships to support organizational goals and mission.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with multidisciplinary teams and community agencies.
  • Superior organizational, time management, and advocacy skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License, access to a reliable vehicle, a clean driver's abstract, and 2 million liability insurance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • The Mustard Seed Shelter operates 24/7, necessitating the Shelter Manager to carry and delegate responsibilities as needed. Ensure availability when needed or provide an appropriate designate. On-call as required.
  • Occasionally, the role may require working beyond regular working hours to address urgent matters and ensure smooth operations.
  • The role involves both sitting and standing throughout the workday. Additionally, moderate physical effort is required for tasks such as keyboarding, writing, and verbal communication.
  • The work environment is highly dynamic, with a fast-paced nature that demands efficient decision-making and adaptability.
  • This position is often fast-paced and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information, problem solve and process documents and data.
  • The role involves responding to highly intense situations, including traumatic events, requiring a moderate to high level of mental effort and emotional resilience.
  • Proficiency in two-way radio communication, MS Office, client management software, FOIP, FDARP, First Aid, NVCI, and SafeTALK.
  • This position may be required to work out of other TMS locations based on the needs and direction of TMS.
