The Mustard Seed helps improve the lives of those in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan experiencing poverty by building community, growing hope, and supporting change. Reporting to the Director of Shelters (South), the Shelter Manager provides leadership and strategic planning to frontline operations and staff. Along with ensuring excellence of service for client needs, it is critical that the Shelter Manager works to create a highly relational, change focused environment led by staff and volunteers.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborate with the Director of Shelters (South) and organizational leadership to coordinate and facilitate Shelter programming that aligns with The Mustard Seed's mission and strategic objectives.
Serve as a liaison between the Shelter, HR, Health and Safety departments, other Mustard Seed Programs, Shelter Managers and Supervisors in other cities, local Fire Department, and businesses to foster effective communication and cooperation.
Prioritize and provide effective solutions to staff concerns and guest issues to ensure a positive and harmonious working environment.
Support HR designated duties, including assisting in the hiring process and providing support for employee relations.
Ensure staff receive proper training and orientation, regularly reviewing training materials to ensure their relevance and effectiveness.
Act as the Health and Safety Representative, assisting in facilitating meetings and addressing concerns promptly. Participate in Health and Safety initiatives for The Mustard Seed organization.
Oversee and support staff and volunteers to effectively work with guests on housing options within the re-housing strategy.
Collaborate with all program and service areas of The Mustard Seed to provide efficient and impactful referrals to benefit the guests.
Handle shelter-related guest grievances, conducting investigations and engaging with staff when necessary to reach satisfactory outcomes.
Work with the Director of Shelters (South) to maintain, develop, and evaluate all Basic Service policies, procedures, and budget.
Assist the Director of Shelters (South) in managing government relationships at the shelter, including yearly audits, check-ins, and daily reports.
Compile and propose the staffing budget, monitor variances throughout the fiscal year, prepare accurate expense reports, and recommend cost-saving techniques.
Collaborate with the Grant department to secure applicable grants and manage corresponding weekly reports and statistics.
Consult with the Director of Shelters (South) on unbudgeted purchases, and provide monthly reports, including statistics, GIK, KPIs, concerns, successes, and program updates.
Inform the Director of Shelters (South) about any team structural changes, including salary adjustments, dismissals, and promotions.
Develop and implement policies, procedures, and key performance indicators to monitor progress and define success objectives.
Help coordinate and participate in special events and projects as directed by the Director of Shelters (South).
Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
A minimum of 5 years of experience working in the human services field, preferably with organizations focused on homeless services and/or poverty reduction/relief.
Bachelor's degree in social science, Human Services, Strategic Leadership, or a related field is required. Consideration may be given to candidates with a combination of relevant education and experience.
Demonstrated experience managing and leading staff for a period of 3-5 years.
Excellent conflict resolution skills, with a track record of effectively handling challenging situations and fostering positive outcomes.
Proven ability to work collaboratively and thrive in a fast-paced, diverse environment, fostering cooperation among team members and stakeholders.
Ability to work under pressure and effectively manage crises, maintaining composure and sound decision-making during challenging times.
Demonstrated ability to network effectively and build strategic partnerships to support the organization's goals and mission.
A Valid Class 5 Driver's License, access to a reliable vehicle, a clean driver's abstract, and 2 million liability insurance are required to fulfill job responsibilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Mustard Seed Shelter operates 24/7, necessitating the Shelter Manager to carry and delegate responsibilities as needed.
Occasionally, the role may require working beyond regular working hours to address urgent matters and ensure smooth operations.
Traveling is an essential part of this role, and the Shelter Manager may need to use a personal vehicle for work-related purposes.
The role involves both sitting and standing throughout the workday. Additionally, moderate physical effort is required for tasks such as keyboarding, writing, and verbal communication.
The work environment is highly dynamic, with a fast-paced nature that demands efficient decision-making and adaptability.
The role involves responding to highly intense situations, including traumatic events, requiring a moderate to high level of mental effort and emotional resilience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An Employment Background Check and satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Search is required.
