Job Summary
The Shelter Chef is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the meal program including the planning, preparation of menu items, and clean-up of kitchen. The Chef will maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the eating, preparation and food storage areas.
Your Role:
Archway's Shelter Chef with the Montvue Shelter contributes by:
Preparing food and drink items according to the menu, specifications, and recipes in a timely manner.
Sourcing seasonal and local ingredients and researching wholesale buying opportunities.
Planning and finalizing menu items and ordering supplies.
Monitoring and managing all cooking tools and ingredients for the program.
Developing recipes that comply with agency policy and preparing modified or special diet items to accommodate residents' requests.
Continuously ensuring the workstation area(s), storage areas, and equipment are properly cleaned and sanitized as per the guidelines for health and safety and food safety.
Maintaining cleanliness of refrigerators and freezers.
Ensuring proper procedures are followed for food preparation regarding time and temperature.
Working with and overseeing kitchen volunteers and/or practicum students.
Supervising expenditures within existing budget allowances and makes budget recommendations to the Supervisor.
This position is a great fit for someone who has experience as a chef, enjoys cooking meals for a group of about 40 people, has great interpersonal skills, and is able to network and build rapport with food source suppliers, shelter residents, staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Our Offer

A permanent, part-time position at 28 hours per week, availability Mondays through Sundays.

Getting an Interview-you will be considered if you have:
Secondary High School Diploma.
Red Seal Certification as a Cook.
Class 5 BC Driver's License.
Food Safe Certification.
Experience preparing and cooking complete meals for a large crowd of approximately 40 people.
Experience in menu planning and developing order supply lists.
The Job Requires you to have:
Strong knowledge of cooking practices, dietary and health requirements.
Strong verbal, written, and active listening skills; able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Strong planning, organizing, and time management skills; able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
Good knowledge of computers; able to use Microsoft Office 365 particularly Word and Outlook, and use of virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
Good relationship building and networking skills; able to build rapport with food source suppliers, residents, volunteers, and community partners.
Good problem-solving skills; able to identify issues and provide cost-effective solutions.
Ability to work independently or in a team setting and to manage and organize daily workload.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to operate job-related equipment.
Ability to understand and maintain clientele/worker boundaries.
Ability to work with vulnerable, disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse environment.
Crisis Intervention Skills Training is an asset.
Ability to work in person with clients, shelter residents and Archway staff and adhere to health and safety protocols.
Ability to be exposed to extreme temperature changes and noise.
Ability to lift, push, pull, move products, equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs.
Ability for long periods of standing, requiring bending and lifting.
Ability to mange frequent interruptions, requiring switch-tasking.
Access to a reliable, personal vehicle for program-related driving, that can be insured according to Archway's transportation policy.
A satisfactory Criminal Records Check is a condition of employment.
