Scope



The on-call staff is responsible for providing immediate and essential settlement assistance to Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) from various ethnic groups at Pearson airport. The On call Settlement counsellor is expected to work co-operatively with others; demonstrate flexibility in organizing work; show a high degree of initiative, discernment, and resourcefulness; must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate thoughtfulness in decision-making to assist refugee families

Responsibilities



? Support refugee arrivals at the airport including escorting, interpreting and supporting in completion of declarations and other paper work

? Assist refugees to go through CBSA, IRCC and PHAC

? Responsible for arranging transportation to the final destination

? Provide comprehensive information to refugees about POE and RAP services

? Assist with providing administrative support to program management & other staff

? Maintain working relations with agency programs and partner agencies

? Effectively track services in internal and external databases, provide accurate reporting for the Supervisor

? Actively participate in the professional development initiatives

? Must meet targets set by Senior Programs Coordinator

? Provide accurate reporting to supervisor

? Acknowledge client needs with respect and empathy

? Must be willing and ability to work on flexible schedules

On call counsellors must be available to work flexible schedules/hours based on needs of incoming flights which includes early morning, evening and weekend work. On call hours will vary from 0-20 hours per week and are not guaranteed.

Requirements



A degree/diploma in Community, Social Work, Counselling/ a combination of experience and education that fulfills the requirements Three years' experience working with immigrant communities

Ability to speak Tigrinya/Amharic is required

Language proficiency certificate identifying the fluency of English and target language skills (for ATIO members present the certificate of membership) Knowledge of settlement and resettlement services and of the ethno-specific programs and services in the GTA Familiarity with issues facing newcomers in Canadian Excellent interpersonal, cross cultural, and communication skills Demonstrate ability to work effectively within a team and independently with minimal supervision Demonstrated reliability, punctuality and attendance Ability to lift 30-40 kg
