Sessional Instructor: BIOL 212: Biological Ways of Thinking (Introductory Biology-Indigenous Bridging Program), Faculty of Science

The Department of Biological Sciences, within the Faculty of Science, invites applications for a Fall 2023 Term Sessional Instructor.

The Faculty of Science believes that the diversity of our student population needs to reflect the diversity of our communities. Additionally, all students benefit from the opportunity to share and learn from Indigenous worldviews and perspectives in their courses in the Faculty of Science, which is situated on Treaty 7 territory and includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut\'ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.

In response to the call to action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and ii\' taa\'poh\'to\'p, the Faculty of Science\'s Indigenous Bridging Program provides an opportunity for those who self-identify as Indigenous to be admitted under the Indigenous Admission Supplementary Process ( ). Students admitted to the Indigenous Bridging Program will be guaranteed admission to the Faculty of Science upon completion of bridging courses to meet program pre-requisites.

Position Description:

The successful candidate will have responsibilities for instruction and associated duties (course co-ordination, lab coordination) for this 3-unit course. This course incorporates elements from high school biology, introductory university biology, and Indigenous Ways of Knowing. This course will provide students with a solid foundation in Biological Sciences for students with Biology 20 in order to successfully undertake a degree program that requires Biology 30 as a pre-requisite (see program admissions requirements here: ). The course will serve as a pre-requisite to Biology 241 in lieu of Biology 30.

Biology 212 - Biological Ways of Thinking
This exploration course is designed to build up knowledge and bridge gaps in biology to prepare students for further study in biology and to meet the biology requirements for their program of study. This course parallels elements from high school biology and introductory university biology with Indigenous Ways of Knowing.

Teaching Schedule:

Delivery Mode: All course components will be delivered in-person.

Fall 2023 Term Dates: August 28, 2023, to December 22, 2023.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate requires a minimum of a Bachelor\'s Degree (BSc) in one of the biological sciences, a Bachelor\'s degree in Education, and teaching experience.
Experience is also required in course design and curriculum development that incorporates Indigenous Ways of Knowing and elements from high school biology and introductory university biology.
