RESPONSIBILITIES
Thompson Rivers University is seeking a sessional faculty member who will teach one section of EDLL 3160: Literacy Across the Content Areas.
Wednesdays and Fridays, 12:30 p.m to 2:20 p.m
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION
Approaches for supporting secondary students in literacy are explored. Teacher candidates develop pedagogical approaches and strategies consistent with the nature of content literacy. Content literacy instruction is needed for students to meet the reading comprehension, academic vocabulary, critical thinking, and academic writing demands they face across the curriculum to effectively acquire and demonstrate knowledge and learning. This course teaches which communication competencies secondary school students need to succeed at school, work and daily life. Teacher candidates develop solid understanding of the cognitive, linguistic, and literacy demands of academic text and design lessons that promote comprehension and critical and innovative thinking across the curriculum.
Prerequisite: Degree in science or mathematics or equivalent
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor of Education is required
A Master of Education is required
Recent experience as a K-12 teacher strongly preferred and three years full-time classroom experience is required
Advanced knowledge of the subject area is required
Experience and excellent understanding of child development and how this relates to elementary or secondary schools is required
Previous successful post-secondary school teaching experience is preferred
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills is required
Proven skills in building intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect are required
Demonstrated experience in integrating Aboriginal knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required
Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) is required
