Reporting to the Dining Room Supervisor, the Server is responsible for providing courteous, efficient dining service to residents in a clean, comfortable, and welcoming environment. This role plays a key part in enhancing residents' daily experience by supporting their dietary needs and ensuring a pleasant mealtime atmosphere. In absence of the Executive Chef, the Server will report to the Cook.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Dining Room Service
Greet residents warmly and escort them to tables if needed.
Take meal and beverage orders accurately and promptly.
Serve meals and beverages according to established dietary requirements and resident preferences.
Ensure a high standard of customer service and resident satisfaction.
Be familiar with the daily menu, including dietary restrictions and allergens.
Communicate special requests or dietary concerns to the kitchen team.
Assist residents in making food choices that align with their health needs and preferences.
Build positive relationships with residents by engaging respectfully and attentively.
Report any resident concerns or changes in behavior to supervisors or care staff.
Provide assistance to residents who may need help navigating the dining area or reading menus.
Cleanliness and Sanitation
Set tables before meals and clean them after service.
Ensure cleanliness of dining areas, including floors, tables, chairs, and service stations.
Follow food safety and sanitation protocols at all times.
Dispose of waste properly and assist with dishwashing if required.
Teamwork and Collaboration
Assist Cook with food preparation, as required.
Work collaboratively with kitchen staff, dietary aides, and care teams.
Help coordinate mealtime service across multiple shifts.
Support team members during peak periods or when coverage is needed.
Risk Management and General Safety
Partner with community team to ensure community is in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements and promotion of risk management programs and/or policies; adherence to safety rules and regulations.
Practice safety procedures at all times including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire safety procedures including extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and lockout tagout procedures.
Report all accidents and incidents immediately.
Report all unsafe and hazardous conditions and/or equipment immediately.
Comply with all infection control techniques, placement of biohazard containers and removal techniques, procedures and policies.
Participate in fire safety and mock disaster procedures.
Other
Works in a safe manner and ensures department operations are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, associated regulations, Mistral Group of Companies policies, procedures, and other associated legislation.
Other related duties, as assigned.
Physical Demands
Standing for extended periods of time at food preparation tables - for up to 10hrs/day.
Walking short distances and manoeuvring in tight spaces within kitchen and dining room environments.
Pulling/pushing/lifting dishracks, food carts, bulk food items, etc., up to 50lbs.
Reaching and lifting food items and kitchen tools from and to upper shelving up to 10lbs - at times with use of an 18inch to 3ft stepping ladder.
Ability to complete repetitive arm motions for periods of up to 1hr while peeling, chopping, and preparing food items.
Working in warm temperatures for extended periods of time.
Memory work required to know dining room layout, table and section numbers and residents.
Dexterity required to open caps, pull spray triggers, open condiment packages, etc.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Education
Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
License, Registration, Training and Clearances
Police Record Check (per RHA), including Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
Immunization and Tuberculosis (TB) testing, per Brighton Retirement Living's policy.
Valid food handling certification and/or training from a local board of health or an agency.
Experience
Previous experience in food service, hospitality, or a senior living environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Familiar with HACCP, WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety, and Sanitation Code.
Basic understanding of food safety and hygiene standards.
Knowledgeable of common dietary needs of senior (e.g. diabetic, low sodium, puree diets, etc.).
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Effective verbal communication with seniors and team members.
Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask during peak dining hours.
Ability to follow instructions, work independently and adapt to change.
A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
