Bear Tracks Environmental Services (2015) Ltd. is seeking a permanent senior wildlife biologist to join our fast-growing team in Lethbridge, AB.Founded as a biological consulting firm in 2006, Bear Tracks' experience portfolio has since grown to include an array of environmental consulting services, allowing us to meet the various needs of our industry and government clientele.Wanting to be part of a vibrant team is a must. We take our work seriously, but fully understand that people have lives outside of their job. We like to keep it light, while providing an amazing product for our clients. This may not work for all companies, but it's worked well for us.The roles and responsibilities of this position will include providing senior technical review of reporting deliverables, primarily related to wildlife and wildlife mitigation planning. The successful individual can be expected to review wildlife inventory and summary reports, biophysical inventories, desktop reviews, impact assessments, and permit applications, as well as cost estimates and proposals. Some field support may be required for the position however the role will be primarily office based.You must be proficient with survey/sampling protocols for various wildlife species as well as the planning and execution of complex, multi-discipline field programs. Proficiency with tasks related to project management (e.g. cost-control, scoping, and management of deliverable schedules) will also be required for this position.Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provide senior technical reviews of reporting deliverables.
  • Effectively manage multiple environmental projects ensuring resource planning, budget and reporting requirements are completed effectively and efficiently.
  • Lead and mentor team members, ensuring alignment with corporate organizational and safety goals.
  • Mentor junior staff with respect to project management skills, deliverable preparation, and field technical skills.
  • Provide guidance and oversight for wildlife related field surveys, including breeding bird, avian migration surveys and species-specific surveys including ungulate and bear den surveys, pileated woodpecker, sharp-tailed grouse, burrowing owl, ferruginous hawk, amphibian call surveys, snake hibernacula surveys, and short-horned lizard surveys to name a few.
  • Provide technical guidance and support during preparation of reporting deliverables, proposals and cost estimates.
  • Provide updates to senior management regarding the progress of various field and reporting programs.
Candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, zoology, environmental science, or related discipline.
  • Proven success in environmental project management and consulting, with expertise in wildlife identification and wildlife field survey protocols.
  • Minimum 10 plus years of field and consulting experience.
  • Leadership and managerial skills are preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and technical writing abilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of provincial and federal regulations, approval procedures, and survey guidelines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Currently registered as a P.Biol. or R.P. Bio, or eligible for registration as a Professional Biologist in Alberta or with the College of Applied Biologists in BC.
  • Experience conducting wildlife surveys in Alberta, Saskatchewan and/or British Columbia.
  • Must work well with others and be organized. Organization is key as you will be responsible for working on various projects concurrently.
Assets for the position include:
  • ArcGIS or QGIS knowledge
  • Plant identification skills
  • Experience with wetland assessments
  • Experience conducting soil assessments
  • Experience conducting environmental monitoring for construction or exploration projects
