In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.


Reports to the Coordinator, Special Needs Services, Seniors' Health. The Speech Language Pathologist supports and facilitates staff within assigned complex and acute care facilities, shared care and community settings in VIHA South, to achieve client goals and attain excellence in practice through consultation, education and client intervention. In addition to responsibilities as a Staff Therapist, the Therapist provides intervention using additional procedures and techniques gained through a combination of postgraduate education and experience.


In collaboration with the Coordinator and Manager, is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of standards and procedures, program development and evaluation processes for adults with physical disabilities requiring service.


Provides educational services in the form of training/information sharing, role modeling and consultation to advance best practices within target program environment.


Consults with selected clients with communication and swallowing disorders referred to the Program, their caregivers and Program staff on clinical issues, such as, needs for short-term, time-limited therapy treatment, community transition support, consultation and/or education for client, caregiver, support or facility staff and makes recommendations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience




Current licensure in a practicing category with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC as a Speech Language Practitioner. Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. A minimum three (3) years' related experience including recent experience working in facility and community environments. Clinical competency in Speech-Language Pathology with emphasis on neurological speech, language and swallowing disorders. Additional coursework and knowledge in assessment and prescription of low and high technology augmentative communication aids/devices for adults living in all settings. Knowledge and experience in Adult Education and learning principles with ability to integrate into programs and strategies. An equivalent combination of education. training and experience may be considered. Valid class 5 driver's license.
