Job Description

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
The Senior Research Assistant will support the PI by compiling academic literature; writing literature reviews; collecting, coding and qualitatively analyzing news media data; transcribing and assisting with research interviews; and assisting with aspects of knowledge mobilization including publishing and presentations.
Duties:

• Identify and compile a database of Canadian news media related to climate disaster evacuations.
• Code, and carry out content analysis of news and social media data.
• Document and compile findings in tabular form, and write periodic summaries of findings.
• Compile literature, and carry out literature review, and assist with compiling written materials.
• Transcribe, code data, analyze data qualitatively, and assist PI with interpretation of findings through regular meetings and progress reports. Employee will assist PI with research interviews.
• Assist in locating and compiling media texts for analysis
• Code data and assist with data analysis, compile literature, and carry out literature review, and assist with compiling written materials.
• Assist PI with preparation of materials in support of grants and funding opportunities as needed.
• Locate relevant calls for papers and other non-academic knowledge mobilization venues for dissemination of findings.
• Will assist PI with logistics and communication relating to research team organization and communication.
• Perform other duties as required or assigned as needed, and according to project demands as it develops.

Qualifications:

• Honours or Graduate student with academic training and experience in social sciences including: Criminology, Criminal Justice, Environmental Studies, Geography, Indigenous Studies, or other related fields/disciplines with a substantive focus on environmental justice, policing, and security studies.
• Qualitative Analysis.
• Qualitative Media Research.
• Qualitative Field Research/Ethnography.
• Familiarity with MS Excel is an asset.

Condition(s) of Employment:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from October 6, 2025 - October 6, 2026, and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-200 hours.
