Senior Product Designer

Montreal, QC, Canada

Job Description

Our Mission

Local Logic is digitizing the built world to make it universally understandable and actionable for consumers, investors, developers, and governments with the ambition of helping build cities that are more sustainable and equitable for the people that live in them.

To achieve that dream, we've built a digital twin of cities, quantifying the built world using data and AI to interpret the $217T real estate market throughout the US and Canada.

We started our journey at McGill University's urban planning department, where we came to see that cities were being developed in all kinds of unsustainable ways. Why were sprawling suburbs still being built, when doing so would increase pollution and inequality? Why were new business parks being built far from mass transit, when doing so would make traffic congestion skyrocket? Why was social housing being built in places that would exacerbate social problems rather than improve them?

It became clear to us why: cities are incredibly difficult to understand. But we realized that with recent advances in data science, all the complexity of cities could be made simple enough for anyone to understand. And that understanding would be essential to making the sustainable, equitable, and prosperous cities that we so desperately need.

Today, Local Logic delivers sophisticated location insights through webtools, APIs, one-click reports and a data analytics platform. Our insights are powered by billions of data points we've generated that describe all aspects of cities -- from the distance to the nearest bus stop, the quietness on a street, to the most recent trends in the housing market and more.

Your Mission

As a Senior Product Designer at Local Logic, you will help drive our approach to building intuitive, meaningful, and impactful products for users. At times, this will involve working with colleagues from product management, engineering, design, research, and data science to evolve the user experience and vision of one of our existing products. At times, it will involve working with others to explore untapped opportunities for products that don't exist yet. In all cases, you bring an overarching design perspective to bear on these challenges, seeking to understand user and customer needs and challenges, collaboratively ideating and quickly prototyping, searching out feedback from users and stakeholders, iterating, and caring deeply about understanding the impact of the team's work on user behavior and needs. We move quickly, leaning, and with care for outcomes - you are a champion for this smart speed and attention and you lead by example in your own design work.

You believe in our mission and want to help us achieve it. You bring your own unique perspective to the team, so you can challenge the way we do things for the better. You're able to speak up when you disagree, ask questions when you don't understand, and take ownership of your work.

We're a remote-enabled company, so if you want to work remotely once a week, twice a week, or five days a week, you'll have all the necessary tools and support you need to do so.

As a Senior Product Designer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Work with team members to understand user needs and pain points. You will work closely with researchers, data scientists, and product managers to learn about users and customers;
  • Draw on research about and learnings from users and customers to engage with colleagues in problem definition and persona identification;
  • Use your prototyping skills to generate low- and high-fidelity prototypes to facilitate product exploration, user research, user testing, and work on new product features and user experience paradigms;
  • Collaborate with team members to flesh out user requirements necessary for ideation and design work;
  • Work with others on the team to leverage user testing to explore product hypotheses and to collect feedback on new and old product features and pathways;
  • Evangelize good user experience throughout our products and support;
  • Contribute to visual materials required by other teams to meet company needs;
  • Where necessary, work with others to build out a design system for our products.
  • Work with the Head of Insights and Head of Product to grow the role of design in product development throughout the company.
  • Be an evangelist for research and data collection to support decision-making in design and throughout the company.
Key Requirements:
  • 6+ years of experience in a design position working on sustained product development;
  • Substantial experience working in cross-functional teams turning collaboratively generated ideas into prototypes at different levels of fidelity from quick low-fidelity mocks and storyboards through to pixel perfect designs, in order to facilitate different phases of the product development cycle;
  • Substantial experience working in cross-functional product teams;
  • Hunger to empathize with the people using our products;
  • Good communication skills that can be adapted to meet the needs of different audiences;
  • Knowledge of and experience working with collaborative design tools (e.g., Figma, Axure, Framer);
  • Experience building products that contain a large amount of data and data visualizations;
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong visual design skills and a capacity to use design to solve real problems.
  • Experience working in a lean start-up environment or demonstrated capacity to work with a lean startup methodology.
Nice to have:
  • Experience designing for mobile-first products and experiences;
  • Experience designing widgets;
  • Experience working in CSS and Javascript;
  • Experience working on UX for machine learning and data-heavy products;
  • Experience working on challenges in urban design, climate risk, or sustainability;
  • Experience mentoring colleagues;
  • Capacity to work in French.
