Purpose of Job
The successful candidate will contribute to the overall success of the Global Communications and Technology & Operations teams by ensuring specific individual goals, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives.

The Senior Manager is responsible for building and delivering best-in-class internal and external communications in support of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and his leadership team. This includes providing trusted advice and individual support to senior leaders within the Bank. The Senior Manager must also demonstrate a desire to learn and a high degree of flexibility and be both eager and able to take on other initiatives as needed within the broader Enterprise Communications group.

The Senior Manager leads and executes communication strategies that drive understanding and successful execution of Technology and all-Bank objectives and collaborates with internal partners to enhance communication within these businesses.

The Senior Manager will oversee a team of direct reports, providing internal and external communications support and guidance.

Accountabilities

  • Lead the planning and management of integrated internal and external communications for key Technology initiatives, contributing to their success by assisting in the development and execution of internal and external communications plans, writing and editing of key communications pieces including business leaders' communications, providing communications advice to business leaders, and measuring success.
  • Works closely with CTO leadership team to develop and drive a compelling narrative, proactively seek out and deliver an internal and external thought-leadership program, and act as a trusted advisor on all matters relating to communications.
  • Production and management of leader communications, including announcements, press releases, online content, videos, town halls and presentations. This includes working with internal business partners to develop these communications as needed and coordinating and executing the delivery of communications to target audiences (internal and external).
  • Produce and manage the development and enhancement of communications internal websites and other communications channels. Responsible for working closely with stakeholders and technical experts to design and deliver these; conceptualizing and creating, content; and measuring use and effectiveness of digital communications.
  • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Champions a high-performance environment and promotes a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team and direct reports by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
1. 20% A: Communications Strategy & Planning
  • Manage an integrated communication function that engages and aligns employees with Scotiabank's business goals and Technology's business strategies, values and brand by leveraging diverse and creative delivery channels and methods.
  • Proactively source content and develop strategies, plans, programs and activities that support Technology's strategic priorities and drive business outcomes.
2. 20% B: Advisory/Leadership
  • Provide the Director, Technology Communications with the communication expertise, advice and service required to successfully deliver programs and initiatives to the CTO leadership team and employee population.
  • Provide leadership to direct reports, the CTO Communication team and business partners to enable high performance, alignment, and employee engagement across Technology's culture.
  • Build and foster relationships with business partners and communication leads globally to ensure CTO communication requirements are adequately addressed through communication strategies and project deliverables.
  • Contribute to the development of the broader CTO team through relationship development, support and informal mentoring of team members.
3. 50% C: Execution
  • Create impactful communication content to drive employee engagement, build awareness and align all employees to Technology's strategic priorities.
  • Create and maintain multiple internal intranet websites to facilitate two-way conversations with key stakeholders and empower all CTO employees to become a performance-oriented culture.
  • Plan, lead and execute internal and external events that align with overall strategic priorities.
  • Complete Change Management Assessments (diagnostic tools, surveys, small groups) and help project teams understand outputs and key implications.
  • Develop and execute a measurement plan with relevant KPIs that drive Technology's Strategic Priorities.
  • Lead and manage multiple projects with conflicting timelines ensuring objectives are met.
4. 10% D: Issues Management
  • Identify key opportunities to streamline processes and scale initiatives across Technology.
  • Identify key and emerging issues impacting senior leadership and employees and work collaboratively with the Global Head, Technology, Operations and Digital Communications to create plans and messaging to address.
Complexity of Position

The position requires the incumbent to be able to connect communication thoughts and materials to the more strategic elements of Technology, and of Scotiabank, to provide context and a sense of purpose for programs and activities. Understanding our Technology business requires the incumbent to become familiar with the operational and relational aspects across the organization, as well as with other Scotiabank business units in general. The incumbent is expected to develop strong relationships with the CTO leadership team and through amplifying a customer perspective, establish a foundation of credibility and trust to create effective communications.

Functionally, the incumbent requires sound and thorough knowledge in communication best practices and approaches, as well as an innate ability to 'connect the dots' on seemingly remote thoughts or messages. The ability to adapt communication content and styles to suit audiences as well as the deliverer is critical to the job's success. Additionally, understanding how technology can be leveraged to expand the repertoire of communication delivery channels is an important element of the job. The job requires the incumbent to regularly assess the communications services being provided and to determine with assurance that the needs of the business and stakeholders are being adequately addressed. Opportunities to close service gaps must be measured against the strategies of Technology and its priorities.

Education & Skills
  • Relevant university degree & certifications - English, Journalism, Education, Communication/Public Relations, Change Management, Business
  • Seasoned professional in change communications, social media platforms, event planning, employee engagement, storytelling
  • Minimum 8-10 years leading communications on large scale or complex initiatives
  • Strong leadership, presentation, writing and media relations skills
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders across the organization
  • Excellent organizational, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Financial Services and Technology acumen
  • Data analytics: Analyze data and translate into insightful trends/messages
  • Suite of Publishing Tools: Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premier); Microsoft Suite (SharePoint, PPT, MS Word, Excel)
  • Ability to select/design appropriate diagnostic tools (surveys, interviews, groups) and identify change implications
  • Assets: Understanding of Project Management, Process Improvement, Business Analysis, Software Development (Agile) methodologies
