The Students' Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) is a non-profit organization working independently from MacEwan University to support students. Our purpose is to enrich the student experience by focusing on their non-academic needs through an array of student-driven programs and services.
We are governed by elected student representatives who set the strategic vision on behalf of students. With support from over 50 full- and part-time staff, we keep our mandate student-focused to achieve the vision.

PURPOSE
Reporting to the General Manager, the Senior Finance Manager position is responsible for overseeing all financial tasks and ensuring that financial policies, procedures, and controls are in place and adhered to. The role is responsible for all financial reporting and analysis as well as overseeing and managing the organization's budget process. Working with SAMU's Executive Committee, particularly the Vice-President Governance & Finance, is imperative to achieving the mandate of this position. The position operates in accordance with the vision, mission, and values of SAMU.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Accounting and Reporting - (70%)
Prepare year-end working papers for the annual audit
Prepare quarterly financial statements for management, committees, and council
Prepare quarterly variance reports for management and committees
Review and propose investment policy changes
Prepare and file GST returns
Manage cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts when required
Supervise and review work completed by junior accountants
Payroll and Benefits Management - (10%)
Review and approve payroll
Issue T4 and T4NR paperwork
File annual WCB reporting
Liaise with staff and benefits provider on staff benefits plan
Risk Management and Internal Controls - (10%)
Monitor and evaluate internal controls and implement appropriate changes
Identify and manage internal and external stakeholder interests
Liaise with external parties (CRA, Auditors, Bankers, and MacEwan)
Provide expertise as a resource member at meetings and on committees
Budget Process - (5%)
Responsible for the organization's budget process including training and orientation to staff
Analyze variance reports and provide department managers and directors quarterly
Other Duties - (5%)
Complete ad hoc tasks from time to time
Lead and/or participate in projects that benefit the organization

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance
Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA)
5+ years of progressive accounting and financial responsibility and a demonstrated
commitment to professional development Leadership experience in training, motivating, and developing employees
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Strong financial accounting, reporting, and analytical skills to ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial information, this includes, but not limited to, preparing quarterly and annual financial statements and working paper files
Ability to construct detailed budgets, cash flow forecasts, and variance analysis including summarizing the results for management
Strong proficiency in MS Office, including Excel, and SAGE 50
Ability to exercise sound professional judgment and decision making on financial, business, organizational, and human resource issues
Superb communication skills
Familiarity and knowledge of accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations would be an asset
Ability to form relationships and collaborate with others
Time management skills to juggle multiple priorities at the same time
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and a variety of projects simultaneously
This full-time position features full health and dental benefits, RRSP/TFSA contributions, and a great working environment. Regular work hours are between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Although rare, there are times when some travel along with weekend and evening work is required. Work hours are 35 hours/week. This is a 1 year contract with the possibility of extension.
