The Opportunity

Are you a self-starter, interested in assisting a dynamic and growing bank to mature its legal advisory services in key areas of regulatory law? The Senior Legal Counsel will be part of the Risk & Enterprise Team within Legal Services and report to the Associate General Counsel. The Risk & Enterprise Team provides legal support across the enterprise in the areas of litigation, regulatory, human resources and workplace law, investigations, financial crime mitigation, incident response, and insurance. The Senior Legal Counsel will build increased maturity and focus for several key areas of regulatory law, including consumer protection, AML/ATF, and privacy, and will ensure we deliver high quality legal advice from a strategic, risk management lens. Key Responsibilities

Provide timely, strategic, practical, and risk-based advice across the organization in relation to regulatory matters relevant to a complex financial services company.

Identify, assess and mitigate legal and regulatory risk in a broad range of areas including consumer protection, anti-money laundering issues, cybersecurity and privacy matters.

Ensure appropriate responses to a wide variety of regulatory inquiries and lead the response to enforcement actions.

Effectively supervise external counsel, ensuring practical and cost-effective mandates.

Provide thoughtful and strategic legal advice that ensures CWB maintains and strengthens its important relationships with its regulators.

Monitor legal and regulatory developments, advise on impacts to CWB, and drive improvements to documents, products, services, and practices.

Ensure the business fully understands the nature of its regulatory obligations, to enable efficient, effective, and risk-based deployment of resources.

Work with the Chief Ethics Officer to ensure the Ethics Program supports the strong commitment of CWB and all of our team members to our regulatory compliance obligations across the enterprise.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders that have investigatory, legal and/or regulatory mandates, including Regulatory Compliance, Fraud and Special Investigations, and Group Risk Management.

Successful Candidate

This role requires a lawyer with a strong foundation in regulatory law within the banking/financial services sector. A strong sense of ownership and independent accountability, as well as the ability to work collaboratively while managing multiple projects and priorities are crucial. The successful candidate must be able to drive further maturity in how legal advisory services are delivered across the enterprise in relation to key areas of regulatory law, including an ability to build relationships with various internal stakeholders, demonstrate credibility as a subject matter expert, and assist the business to develop procedures and systems to ensure we are meeting our regulatory obligations while effectively mitigating risk and responding to challenges.

What you will bring to this role

Bachelor of Laws or equivalent and member in good standing of a provincial Law Society.

Minimum 7 years of related legal experience including:

Experience in banking/financial services; and

Strong knowledge of consumer protection, AML/ATF, and/or privacy.

Strong analytical capability and the ability to comprehend complex business, legal and regulatory situations.

A personable, collaborative nature with excellent written and oral communications skills.

Highly developed legal, drafting, and problem-solving skills.

Sounds judgment, including ability to support the business in complex risk assessments.

Highly motivated.

Ability to provide difficult and complex legal advice in situations where such advice may be at odds with other objectives, and to do so diplomatically and credibly.

Sharp focus on relationship building across the enterprise and delivering legal solutions that facilitate the objectives and strategies of our senior leadership team.

A demonstrated ability to think creatively, broadly, and strategically and a commitment to learning.
