General Accountability


Reporting to the Chief Enterprise Architect, the incumbent performs the leadership, facilitation, analysis and design tasks required to develop the enterprise technology architecture (ETA) and to ensure that it is leveraged. This incumbent coordinates closely with enterprise application, data, information and solution architects, while virtually leveraging subject matter experts from any needed technical or business area.

The incumbent may also work closely with separate teams of project or solution architects that do only individual project work and will collaborate with business constituents, other EA team members, project teams and IT staff as needed to fulfil the responsibilities described above.

Key Job Functions


Develop the enterprise technology architecture (ETA) and ensure that it is leveraged:
  • defines key technology portfolios and ensures they are managed by either leading that activity directly or by establishing and then supporting asset-centric portfolio management disciplines (for such technology portfolios as application, service-oriented architecture [SOA] service or shared infrastructure);
  • develops road maps describing the evolution of all enterprise technology portfolios from current state to future state;
  • ensures that project management or solution delivery life cycle efforts and project architects specifically leverage all aspects of enterprise architecture (EA) — separately by EA viewpoint (ie. business, information and technology) and via guidance at the ETA level across those viewpoints;
  • analyzes enterprise business context (trends and business strategy), as well as change requirements in other EA viewpoints, to derive the ETA change requirements to guide technology decisions for the enterprise



Coordinate analysis and implementation activities with project teams, EA team members, business constituents and IT staff:
  • consults with application or infrastructure development projects to harmonize systems or infrastructure with the ETA, and identify when it is necessary to modify the solution architecture to accommodate project needs;
  • works closely with the project management office (PMO) to ensure alignment of plans (including migration plans and road maps) with what is being delivered (projects);
  • coordinates activities with enterprise business, information and technology architects;

GENERAL DUTIES AND ROLES IN ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES
  • Defines the principles and the models, including solution patterns, to guide technology decisions for the enterprise;
  • Assists with governance activities associated with ensuring ETA and, thus, EA compliance;
  • Ensures that all individual solution architecture design and analysis work is documented in a structured fashion matching the EA framework and is stored in a common place;
  • Understands and advocates the principles of business and IT strategies, as well as of EA development and service delivery.
  • Promotes the EA process (overall, not just for ETA), its outcome and ongoing results, and leads the communication, marketing or educational activities needed to ensure ETA success and use;
  • Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service provider and an employer.

Education and Experience


  • A university degree in Computer Science, or the equivalent, combined with directly related experience in a business or computer related discipline.
  • Multiple years of hands-on design and implementation experience in at least two IT disciplines (ie. Application Development, Network Design, Middleware Design, Servers and Storage, Database Management or Operations Management).
  • Significant practical experience with IT applications, in particular experience with application and technical architectures. Significant practical experience in designing and implementing enterprise systems. Significant experience in analysis, design and programming.
  • Knowledge of key aspects of the business as well as knowledge of all aspects of enterprise architecture.
  • Experience in a senior architectural position, managing a team of architects as well as experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Project level experience in the full lifecycle of technology implementation and configuration and effective understanding of trade-off analysis.
  • Experience in project solution architecture and exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments.

Additional Requirements


  • Must have the ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations, translate business needs into technology architecture requirements, estimate the financial impact of ETA and individual solution architecture alternatives, define multiple solution options to business problems and quickly comprehend the functions and capabilities of new technologies.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
  • Basic knowledge of financial models and budgeting. Basic knowledge of business process re-engineering principles and processes as well as basic knowledge of information principles and policies.
  • Understanding of SOA, object-oriented analysis and design, or client/server systems and an understanding of the enterprise's political climate and how to respond to the political challenges.
  • Strong understanding of network and data center architecture, as well as application development methodologies.
  • Autonomous and self motivated with experience defining and executing a large-scale business and IT strategy.
