Job Overview The incumbent must develop and be responsible for the planning, writing, and editing of a variety of internal communication materials. The candidate must also edit articles written by others to ensure that they meet divisional and departmental requirements.
General Accountabilities:

  • Develop and be responsible for the planning, writing, editing and publishing of a variety of communication materials, including employee newsletters (e.g., The Connect), corporate reports (e.g., Pension Report), corporate messages, scripts, speeches, bulletins, announcements, emails, and Intranet (i.e., HydroNet) content in accordance with corporate, divisional and departmental objectives. Plan, organize and monitor work activities to ensure deadlines and business objectives are met.
  • Participate in the editorial planning process for a variety of ongoing publications and provide suggestions for topics to be covered or creative approaches to writing assignments to help communicate corporate messages. Edit articles written by others to ensure that they meet divisional and departmental requirements.
  • Build and maintain a network of contacts within the Company including employees and management at all levels of the organization. Obtain information required for writing assignments by soliciting information from employees at all levels and, as required, individuals outside of the Company.
  • Provide communication assistance to management in times of labour strife and provide writing assistance on a continuing basis in other labour relations and personnel matters requiring communication to large numbers of staff.
  • Work with other employees and external contractors (e.g., writers, photographers) employed by the department on a casual basis, or for a particular assignment to check work and give instructions to ensure that the material produced meets corporate and departmental standards and requirements and is consistent with communication best practices.
  • Work with and mentor co-op students, interns and/or new graduates.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Selection Criteria: Essential Competencies:
  • Requires extensive corporate / organizational communication experience, typically gained over a period of 8 to 10 years in a demanding corporate communications and/or journalism environment, including:
    • Familiarity with the practical aspects of writing and editing in the development of articles.
    • Understanding of the Company including its communication policies and objectives and their application and intent.
    • Proficiency in recognizing and addressing communication needs, corporate communication challenges and in the development of communication programs.
    • Familiarity with established practices and procedures governing the gathering and release of information, the responsibilities of various departments and divisions and the programs and subjects to be covered.
    • Understanding of financial and investment principles to prepare corporate reports, etc.
    • Knowledge of journalism, marketing, communication theory and social psychology, normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training (Grade XII plus 4+ years) in the appropriate subjects such as journalism, or the equivalent education, such that the candidate can:
    • Develop a variety of communication materials.
    • Assess the effectiveness of written communication articles and to resolve communication issues.
    • Demonstrate superior knowledge of English and communicative skills to prepare feature writing articles.
    • Demonstrate high level interviewing and reporting skills enabling preparation of editorials and articles for use in employee information publications.
    • Requires proceeding with assignments on own initiative, with occasional reference to Supervisor for direction on highly unusual and sensitive problems and important matters in order to keep the Supervisor informed of major developments.
    • Organization and planning skills, including collecting, organizing, managing and understanding large volumes of quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources.
    • Must be able to prioritize multiple activities.
    • Must display high level of and consistent attention to detail, achieving thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task
    • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with both internal and external customers.
    • Must have effective team player skills, willingly cooperating and working collaboratively toward solutions that generally benefit all involved
    • Must have a working knowledge and ability to acquire computer skill needed in using Microsoft applications, Hydro One computer applications, and other vendor provided programs and applications.
