Who We Are

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), the largest faculty at Simon Fraser University, is home to 19 departments and 9 programs. Within the Office of Dean, Arts Central is a hub for FASS students where they can easily connect with staff to discuss academic or engagement matters, to work, or to simply connect with fellow students. Arts Central staff, comprised of Academic advisors, a student engagement coordinator and staff working for Co-operative Education programs in FASS, are involved in all activities pertaining to recruitment, conversion, retention, engagement, advising, leadership and curriculum development for FASS at SFU.

About the Role

The Senior Director, Strategic Academic Planning and Student Affairs provides executive level support to the Dean of Arts and Social Sciences on strategic academic planning for the Faculty and works closely with senior academic leaders within a complex and the largest Faculty at Simon Fraser University. The role leads strategic academic planning and initiatives, alongside Associate Deans, in alignment with the Dean\xe2\x80\x99s vision, strategy, priorities and objectives and contributes to the overall strategic direction. The Senior Director is responsible for the strategic assessment of programs within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) ensuring alignment with university policies to support the Faculty\xe2\x80\x99s mandate. The position sets the strategic direction and provides leadership in the Faculty\xe2\x80\x99s operational areas of student affairs, curriculum planning and development, communications and marketing and indigenous relations. The position also oversees the activities and the management of all aspects of Arts Central, including its operations, administration, budget, human resources, and information systems.

As the ideal candidate, you bring to the role your experience in leading strategic academic planning initiatives and experience with all aspects of the student affairs portfolio and a vision to enhance the student experience. You value the importance of building strong relations with internal and external connections, demonstrated by your effectiveness in communications and collaboration. You are solutions and results focused who can thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a related discipline and five years of related management experience in strategic academic planning, student development, student engagement and retention, academic advising, or student services, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Excellent knowledge of the developmental, learning and transition needs of undergraduate students (both domestic and international).
  • Excellent knowledge of university policies and regulations related to academic advising, enrollment management and student services.
  • Excellent knowledge of undergraduate program regulations, academic curriculum review procedures and processes.
  • Excellent knowledge of interdisciplinary programming and curriculum models.
  • Excellent facilitation, consensus-building and decision-making skills.
