The Senior Director reports directly to the Dean of the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM). As a member of the Dean's Executive Committee, the Senior Director plays a significant role in all high-level decision making for the Cumming School of Medicine.


The Senior Director supports the Dean of Medicine and works closely with the Vice Dean, Business Partners, seventeen Associate Deans, twenty Department Heads, and seven Research Institute Directors in order to coordinate the administrative, operational and financial affairs of the Faculty. The total enterprise is approximately $300M annually as this includes the research budget, the clinical partner budget, the philanthropic budget, the clinical operation and other components.



The position requires the incumbent to balance multiple priorities, think creatively and motivate senior administrative staff and faculty, while ensuring broad support for initiatives.


Summary of Key Responsibilities

The Senior Director serves as a member of the senior leadership team in the Cumming School of Medicine providing expertise and guidance in relation to executing the School's strategic plan in compliance with University policies and procedures. The role is accountable for the following, but are not limited to:

All Planning and Fiscal Accountability. Specifically: + Managerial accountability for a large, complex Faculty with a high volume of research, education, and clinical service (>$300 million annual revenue); ensuring that the faculty maintain a balanced budget
+ Working with the Dean and the Dean's Executive Committee, the Senior Director develops strategic plans (short and long-term) for the Faculty including strategic financial direction of new initiatives and all business cases within the Faculty
+ Works with the Associate Dean, Research Infrastructure regarding space planning and allocation; Strategic planning and oversight of capital projects
+ Responsible for key decision making as part of the Dean's Executive Committee and overall coordination of the strategic plan and annual comprehensive Business Plan regarding the operational/administration function
Management and Communication: + Management of strategic operations, information management and business operations support staff
+ Mentoring, motivating and supporting senior support staff, including providing feedback, supporting career development and succession planning
+ Builds key relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders by ensuring consistent and clear communication
Implementation of Strategy: + Dissemination of the faculty vision, mission and values
+ Identifies opportunities for increased efficiency and improved quality and takes action to exploit them
+ Provides support to senior leadership regarding resource allocation and utilization in order to achieve strategic objectives
+ Facilitates effective change management processes including implementation of new or redesigned policies and procedures
Coordination with Central Services, ensuring appropriate flow of information across legal, internal controls, financial reporting and budgeting, research accounting, facilities, capital projects, human resources, information technologies and infrastructure, risk management, and government report and third-party reporting

Qualifications / Requirements:



Must possess a recognized post-secondary education in business management and a recognized accounting designation (CGA or CMA/CPA) , Graduate degree preferred 8-10 years increasingly progressive experience in leadership roles in large complex organizations required A demonstrated and progressive track record in a leadership role within either the education or health sector, experience in both is ideal Proven expertise in successfully navigating large, complex institutions with multiple stakeholders A broad cross-section of financial experience, including financial and performance reporting, budgeting and forecasting, cost accounting, development of internal control system, and capital project
management
Experience rolling out strategic plans and implementing them across departments via budgets and process, ensuring the vision and values are maintained throughout Cooperative team player; able to work in a fast-paced, multi-project environment. Proven expertise working with multi-stakeholder projects Proven leadership skills: ability to lead and motivate a team to help them achieve their full potential and to attain exceptional individual and team performance Extensive project management skills Must possess strong negotiation and problem-solving skills that are both diplomatic and effective Familiarity with principles of academic institutions and health delivery systems Proven ability to work with diverse groups with differing interests and motivations Experience in government and community relations Familiarity and skill with automated business information systems
