We are seeking a Senior Director, Corporate Affairs (Hybrid or on-site). This position can be located at any of our sites in Ontario (Cambridge, Peterborough, Toronto, Arnprior, Kanata, Port Elgin, Oakville).

JOB PURPOSE

Develop and direct all communications, government relations and community outreach activities for the BWXT Commercial Operations (CO) segment businesses, including BWXT Canada Ltd., its subsidiaries BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. (NEC), Intech International Inc., BWXT Precision Manufacturing and BWXT Medical Ltd. (BML). This includes strategy development and deployment of communications and materials to inform employees, the public, media and government about BWXT's role in nuclear power.

Responsible for all aspects of public/media and government relations, marketing and internal communications, and community outreach across all BWXT CO sites and subsidiaries. Acts as the team leader for crisis communications for all BWXT CO sites and subsidiaries. Directs all activities related to and is the single point of contact to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) for the Public Information & Disclosure Program (PIDP). Spearheads engagement with indigenous communities and industry trade associations. The Senior Director is the company spokesperson for all CO subsidiaries and provides communications counsel to executives on company initiatives, organizational changes and current/emerging issues.

The position reports to the Senior VP Government Relations & Communications and is responsible for a team of 3 across BWXT CO. The incumbent must be skilled in communicating with and influencing external stakeholders who may have conflicting or competing objectives with the BWXT CO.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Marketing Communications

  • Overall responsibility for the development of strategic marketing plans that enhance the BWXT brand.
  • Provide direction and signs-off on all activities related to the development of marketing collateral, including company websites, social media, brochures, videos, advertising and presentation material in coordination with Senior Director, Corporate Communications.
  • Overall responsibility for the company's participation in industry events and speaking opportunities.
  • Development of key messaging for use in company marketing materials and events.
  • Responsible for staying abreast of market trends through affiliation/participation with industry and trade associations. Stay actively involved with the Canadian Nuclear Association, Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries, Canadian Nuclear Society, Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council, and others.
Internal Communications Management
  • Provide strategic direction over all internal communication initiatives, including communication materials, the myBWXT portal, events, crisis communications planning and the department's role in various committees.
  • Oversee the development and distribution of all employee communications, including both printed and electronic media (email, myBWXT portal, social and digital signage) in coordination with Senior Director, Corporate Communications.
  • Provide communication counsel to leadership for development of strategic and/or sensitive messaging, including support for organizational / change management.
  • Direct all communication activities related to acquisition or restructuring initiatives.
  • Direct communication staff participation in organizing internal initiatives and events.
Public Relations
  • Coordinate activities and plans with US Senior Director, Public Relations.
Licensed Sites
  • Overall responsibility for the development and management of the PIDPs for NEC and BML, and acts as the Communications contact for the CNSC.
  • Overall responsibility for the NEC and BML public websites and development of all information therein.
  • Develop and initiate PR campaigns to promote the Company in general and ahead of public hearings (community info. sessions, public BBQs, public liaison committee, tours, newsletters, surveys, etc.).
  • Represent the company at public hearings to respond to Commission questions related to the PIDP.
  • Chair the Toronto Community Liaison Committee.
General (all sites)
  • Act as a key contact and company spokesperson for industry trade and advocacy groups.
  • Act as the key contact for all CO community associations.
  • Provide philanthropic direction for charitable donations, scholarships, oversee C&M forecast/budget across Canada.
  • Has oversight for the Volunteer Strong Committee at all CO locations, approve budget and fund recipients.
  • Responsible for the planning and logistics of all CO public / community organization tours.
  • This role is also the Chair of the Company's Progressive Aboriginal Relations Committee.
  • Represent the company on the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industry's Indigenous Relations Supplier Network.
Media Relations
  • Strategic direction and implementation of all CO media relations activities.
  • Provide media counsel to executive staff, develop and distribute holding statements, key messages.
  • Develop and secure approvals for news releases by working with CO and corporate media relations and investor relations.
  • Key spokesperson for all Canada media, develop strong relationships with all targeted reporters.
  • Overall responsibility for crisis communications and media contact during emergency situations.
  • As needed, coordinate media advisories, press conferences, events, tours, interviews.
Government Relations
  • Develop and implement a strategic engagement plan for enhancing the BWXT brand and expanding the footprint of supporters within local, provincial and national levels of government involved in energy policy and regulation.
  • In conjunction with the SVP, Corporate Affairs and President, CO, work with government relations consultant on key initiatives, messaging and relationship development with key government agencies and officials.
  • Participate in community events and interface with local government and community groups to expand support for the company and nuclear energy.
  • Represent the company on the Ontario Nuclear Advisory Committee to help inform government and public on key industry and company priorities.
  • Stay abreast of government policy that affect the business, both on the energy and nuclear medicine file.
  • Nurture existing and pursue new relationships with elected officials through continuous outreach and engagement.
  • Oversee company involvement in international trade missions.
  • Engage with BWXT U.S. government relations team, as appropriate, on key initiatives that may have Canadian and U.S. synergies.
Management/Administrative
  • Develop and manage Communications, Government Relations and community engagement budgets across CO.
  • Responsible for managing two direct employees: Manager, Marcom & Design and Communications & Community Relations Specialist and a total staff of three communications personnel.
  • Guide and direct communications staff, ensuring staff have adequate training and professional development opportunities. Monitor staff to ensure appropriate succession planning.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Government, Political Science or Diploma with equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience as a manager in this area.
  • Management, resource evaluation, administrative and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to convey complex issues, events and concepts in succinct, easy-to-understand language, both in writing and orally.
  • Knowledge of computer and desktop publishing skills, eye for marketing and design.
  • Experience in indigenous community outreach.
  • Understanding of requirements for federally regulated entities preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% to 40% of the time.
