Senior Digital Instrumentation and Control System Engineer

The Computer Systems Engineering department is responsible for digital instrumentation and control equipment for projects involving control, monitoring and operator displays in the nuclear island for our existing domestic and international customers and new builds. We are responsible for digital system design, equipment selection and procurement, and all software activities.
Immediate activities include development of the control and display system architecture and technical requirements and specifications for new build nuclear power plant designs. Future activities may include: design, development, verification, documentation, and testing of computer system software for internal products, projects involving new CANDU nuclear power plant computer architectures/designs, and/or computer retrofits to existing nuclear plants and installations.
Your role within the team:
Duties will be carried out independently and may include the following:
Perform conceptual and preliminary design of safety, control and monitoring computer systems to define the system requirements, computer architecture, product/tool technologies and evaluate system performance and reliability.
Evaluate digital I&C system products and prepare processes and procedures for implementing such products into the computer software design, development and V&V processes.
Execute software engineering tasks including software requirements specification, software design descriptions, coding, verification, testing, and documentation.
Develop software and scripts using a variety of programming languages/ toolsets/ environments including, but not limited to: IEC 61131-3 languages, C, C++, Varian / SSCI-890 Assembler, Fortran, Pascal, Visual Studio, LabView, XML, Photon.
Test script development using in-house scripting languages.
Prepare requirements and develop tools for test/development systems as needed for the production of safety critical software.
Develop cyber security processes and documentation related to project activities (procurement, design, etc.), and identification of vulnerabilities / controls for specific end-devices. Cyber security activities may require supplemental security clearances.
Update and/or prepare Computers Engineering design documents including software requirements specifications, software design descriptions, and software manuals.
Assist in planning activities associated with design, verification and testing of computerized safety, control and monitoring systems.
Assist in preparation of work scopes, design and quality requirements, and design plans for the various stages of computer systems development.
Assist in preparation of guides and procedures following international standards for work practices related to quality software for safety applications in the nuclear industry.
Interface with various engineering disciplines, suppliers, and other divisions within the company.
Assist in providing responses to technical enquiries from design review teams and regulatory agencies.
Deliver technical presentations accurately and effectively.
Manage assigned work effectively, including prioritizing, executing, managing schedule and budget, and reporting, to meet project goals

The ideal candidate:
Relevant Honours degree in computer or electrical engineering from a university of recognized standing.
Experience commensurate with the grade level, with a minimum of 12 years of pertinent engineering experience.
Member in good standing of the Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.Eng).
Demonstrate good technical skills and problem-solving capabilities and be able to seek practical solutions to engineering problems.
Demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills as well as a strong customer focus and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Familiarity with instrumentation and control system functions, configurations and equipment as used for CANDU plant process systems, safety systems or safety-related systems, or for similar systems in other industries would be an asset.
Previous experience with methodologies and processes used for I&C modernization of a nuclear power plant would be an asset.
Experience at an operating nuclear power station or a similar installation is not required, but would be an asset.
Familiarity with industrial/nuclear QA programs and procedures along with pertinent CSA, IEEE, or related I&C engineering codes and standards would be an asset.
