Role Summary

The Senior Category Manager position is responsible for developing and implementing the regional supply base strategies for divisions in North America, ensuring that the strategy is specific, fact-based, comprehensive, consistent, well-communicated and delivers superior financial returns and a competitive advantage to the business. In addition, the Senior Category Manager ensures that the strategy developed is dynamic and responsive to the market, customer, supplier, and company needs. This individual has primary responsibility for the supplier relationship and drives supplier selection, development, and overall supplier management. The Senior Category Manager works with the Group Purchasing Leads to ensure a shared vision and alignment with overall business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops procurement and sourcing strategies for Magna divisions in Canada, US and Mexico for Energy portfolio, including but not limited to Electricity and Natural Gas, in terms of technology, quality, delivery and total cost.
  • Coordinates all supplier issues with applicable functional organizations.
  • Leads, manages and negotiates contracts and supply agreements in support of overall goals and objectives.
  • Performs financial analysis and business case justification for project opportunities to present to senior leadership.
  • Supports in creating written proposals for priority opportunities and drive agreements to contract execution.
  • Leads internal reviews of contracts with required functional areas such as Finance, Legal, etc.
  • Keeps abreast of professional developments, maintains continuous in-depth knowledge of market conditions, industry trends and identifies relevant opportunities.
  • Identify, prioritize and implement cost reduction and risk mitigation projects.
  • Responsible for supplier recommendation on a commodity basis and work with the divisional buyers to implement these sourcing recommendations.
  • Research for key commodities/products and conducts market analysis, project diligence and financial analysis to support the global and local requirements
  • Supports and interacts with sustainability teams in the development and execution of the company's sustainability strategies in alignment with goals and objectives, including but not limited to: identifying areas of opportunity, summarizing research evaluation results and recommendations, writing reports, setting guidelines, etc.
  • Supports in communication and implementation of changes aligned with the sustainability corporate strategy
  • Will initiate, recommend, or provide solutions through designated channels.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications/Requirements

Knowledge and Skills
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or Business Degree required
  • Thorough understanding of Electricity and Natural Gas rate structures in Canada, US and Mexico is required
  • Business finance training is desired
Work Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of procurement or related experience for a large multi-plant enterprise
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Electricity and Natural Gas procurement. Options include: regulated and deregulated markets, country specific public energy programs and carbon tax exemptions, energy efficient products and price structures such as fixed, block, and indexed, renewable energy options such as PPAs and VPPAs, certificate programs such as RECS, IRECS, etc.
  • Ability and experience to understand the nuances of energy calculations and contract details as well as distinctions for other utility contracts, market conditions, regulations and commercial structures to lower the risks, informed load forecasting, measure results, control costs and adjust accordingly
  • Ability and experience with commodity indexes and other methods to track performance, such as Fastmarkets, Platts, CME, etc. would be an asset
Skills and Competencies
  • Works on extremely complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of intangible variables
  • proven ability to evaluate new energy markets and opportunities, including utility tariffs, policies, and power contracts
  • Experience with renewable energy, certificate programs, project development, advance energy storage or alternative energy resources
  • Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous projects with minimal direction
  • Experience building relationships and working with industry stakeholders
  • Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may supervise the activities of subordinates
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to develop and execute strategies
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills and financial acumen to deliver results in a fast-paced environment
  • Interprets and complies with Company policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Prepares reports, cost analysis, charts, graphs, and other statistical information
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerBI, PowerPoint, and Word
Work Environment
  • Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer
  • May require travel
