Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Energy Management Solutions (EMS) is responsible for the timely and successful delivery of programs aimed at increasing CN's fuel efficiency and be a significant contributor to the Automated Train Operations (ATO) roadmap as the energy management segment contributes to the locomotive onboard operations. The position establishes and drives transformational strategies to

  • Build team of domain competency, with multi-year view of technology enablement for EMS
  • Build strong alignment and collaboration with Internal Business partners (Transportation Networks Operations and Sustainability)
  • Ensure successful, cost effective, timely and quality, business-oriented solution deliveries
(e.g. Trip Optimizer; Horse Power Tonnage Analyzer; Locomotive Idling; Time To Arrival application; Network Optimization etc...)
  • Implement structured Engineering/Development methodology (e.g. SEDP)
  • Influence EMS's Product Management and associated solution roadmap
  • Drive 3rd Party Managed Services Partner(s) to deliver integrated solutions
The incumbent will also engage (and influence) the Decarbonization Steering Committee, to drive focus and enable key strategic decision making. The role will require effective cross-functional leadership/collaboration across several sub-domains within the Operating Technology (OT) vertical as well as influencing contributors from the platform and infrastructure horizontals. It is also expected that over time the senior manager EMS will contribute to industry discussions shaping the ecosystem for ATO as well as vendor engagement to ensure optimal solution deliveries.

Main Responsibilities

Solution Delivery

Prioritize demands and allocate vertical team resources and leverage horizontal capabilities as appropriate

Understand the captured business requirements and ensure the delivery team converts the customer needs into technological solutions

Oversee end-to-end program delivery including design, development, testing, and analysis

Contribute to a comprehensive strategic roadmap that addresses business requirements for the Transportation and Operations Solutions technology portfolio

Ensure technology solutions are scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient

Create and maintain effective mechanisms to track and monitor project delivery performance, validate estimates as presented and identify and allocate required project resources

Streamline project activities to achieve timely and cost-effective completion in accordance with approved scope, budgets, and schedules

Create, actively lead, and report on the metrics that will objectively evaluate the strategic and tactical delivery performance levels of the project team

Provide business, functional and technical evaluation, guidance, as well as recommendations regarding new solutions required to support evolving business needs and ATO roadmap

Maintain a high degree of awareness of solution enhancements and new solution options from current and prospective vendors

Drive a business-led, enterprise-wide approach to the transformation, establishing appropriate standards for data and processes, while supporting the migration of our businesses before, during, and after their implementation

Ensure alignment between prioritized business objectives and I&T strategy and develop the technology response and roadmaps in partnership with all stakeholders

Articulate progress, milestones achieved, risks and issues and financial management to any internal or external stakeholder

Leadership and Change Management

Demonstrate credibility, urgency, and empathy, and ensure delivered solutions meet business expectations

Drive the strategic direction of the functional area and achieve the I&T strategic plan

Build, direct and develop a best-in-class team

Lead by example on the delivery and development of strong people management practices in line with standards, including performance management, talent management and retention, learning and development and building a succession pipeline for key roles

Assess team members, their skills, and professional developmental needs

Make capacity and staffing recommendations and changes to maintain and support project delivery

Support, coach and develop team performance, recognizing and utilising individual strengths to achieve optimum benefit for the team

Ensure EMS I&T workforce capabilities are aligned with core business issues and processes, industry trends, and best-in-class technologies

Cultivate a continuous improvement and learning environment

Collaboration, Operations and Budget

Establish the annual Operating and Capital budget for Energy Management Solutions

Working Conditions

Occasional business travel (Canada and US) in accordance with CN policy

Requirements

Experience

15-20 years of experience leading complex technology programs (Transportation, Aerospace, or Telecommunication)

Experience in project management of large-scale software and hardware systems

Experience in facilitating process improvement workshops, and building consensus around a complex plan with many stakeholders

Experience in successfully managing outsourced (full or partially) development and implementation efforts

Experience in Waterfall, Agile, DevOPs, Cloud, and mission critical environments

Experience in a senior-level strategy leadership position

Rail operation experience (knowledge of System-of Systems) is a strong asset, including Precision Dispatch Systems, Back Office systems and Locomotive On Board technologies)

Education/Certification/Designation
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, computer science or related work experience
