General Accountability


Reporting to the Chief Enterprise Architect, this position is responsible for the overall design of the enterprise business architecture and related information technology strategies. The focus is primarily on developing the roadmap from current state business capabilities to future state business capabilities through a series of technology strategies aligned to the organization's corporate strategy. This requires the position to have a diverse understanding of business strategy, operating models, and emerging trends in both business and technology. This also includes the development of enterprise architecture practice, business facing and executive presentation development, business case creation, business solution development, conceptual technology solutions, and IT strategy development. The incumbent will play a leading role in enterprise architecture practice, helping develop and establish processes related to business architecture, IT capital planning, IT alignment to business and strategy, IT risk management, IT value management as well as communicating and presenting IT strategies and solutions in business terms to stakeholders outside of IT.

Key Job Functions


Develop and evolve business architectures:
  • develops and evolves the IT strategic alignment framework, aligning IT capabilities and initiatives to the organization's corporate strategy.



Extend the business architecture practice, and improve the level of alignment of IT to the business and strategy:
  • develops and evolves the Common Requirements Vision (CRV), the distillation of the corporate strategic plan along with other major business needs into a series of business solution requirements;
  • develops and evolves the Future State Architecture vision, the highest level technology architecture which articulates the future state capabilities required for the organization to achieve its strategic objectives and initiatives;
  • collaborates with Enterprise Architecture (EA) team members, subject matter experts, technology experts, project teams and IT leaders in the creation of roadmaps and technology solutions to achieve the future state architecture vision.



Improve the level of value that IT contributes to the business through business solutions and technology strategies:
  • develops and evolves the IT capital planning process;
  • creates and evolves the business case and opportunity assessment frameworks and documents, and supports the Chief Enterprise Architect and Head of ITS in the evolution of the process;
  • collaborates with Head of ITS, Chief Enterprise Architect and ITS leaders in the development and evolution of the IT strategic plan, including authoring parts of the strategic plan document;
  • develops business facing documents and presentations in support of the Head of ITS and Chief Enterprise Architect, including actually presenting content;
  • collaborates with Chief Enterprise Architect in development and evolution of key enterprise architecture artifacts, including, but not limited to authoring parts of the Enterprise Architect Charter, Enterprise Architecture Framework, Enterprise & Solution Architecture Risk Framework and EA Principles.

GENERAL DUTIES AND ROLES IN ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES
  • Performs select solution strategy and architecture activities on major and high profile technology initiatives.
  • Supports Chief Enterprise Architect on new and emerging technology initiatives which may include research, development of initial approaches, relation to business opportunities, business case development and authoring portions of documents, presentations and RFPs.
  • Represents the organization in internal or external working groups.
  • Leads, collaborates or manages teams in the development of business architecture and business solution architecture related activities which may include business capability and process analysis, solution option and tradeoff analysis and managing the architecture and solution development process.
  • Ensures productive collaboration among all staff involved in planning, designing, developing, implementing and supporting business architectures.
  • Liaises with the users in assessing their business solution requirements.
  • Advances EA and IT in business to IT alignment, and the business value of IT.
  • Assumes a supervisory role in co-ordinating all activities related to business architecture.
  • Surveys the industry continuously for opportunities to introduce business enabling technologies aligning the future state architecture vision and presents recommendations to the Chief Enterprise Architect and the Head of ITS.
  • Develops and assimilates industry standard KPI metrics and IT benchmarks against current IT organization performance.
  • Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service provider and an employer.

Education and Experience


  • University degree in a relevant discipline plus several years of formal training and hands-on experience in data and database management.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in various aspects of business architecture and the business value of information technology (IT);
  • Knowledge about the theory, practices, technology and methodology in business strategy/ operations, business architecture, IT strategy and enterprise architecture including proven experience and certification;
  • Understanding of common enterprise architecture frameworks (such as Zachman, TOGAF and FEAF); approaches to modeling business architecture, capabilities and processes; approaches to aligning IT to business and strategy; approaches to presenting IT business value and metrics; articulation and visual depiction of future state architecture vision; business case and IT capital planning methodology, techniques, cost-benefit and portfolio management;

Additional Requirements


  • Experience creating materials and presenting to business and executive audience, and translating IT solutions and terminology into business friendly terms;
  • Experience in collaborating with others in the development of a strategy, with a history of success in influence without authority;
  • Strong technology background in successfully leading and developing large scale application or technology solutions;
  • Sound judgement; superior organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities; knowledge of project planning and management, including scope, time and resource management; and well-developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication, facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
  • Experience in business and enterprise architecture, IT strategy, and supervision of staff in the management of IT teams, is preferred.
