Job Purpose:

Working in a dynamic and inclusive team environment, the Senior Analyst, Financial Reporting, is responsible for the preparation of intercompany reports for deposit with banks, call loans and swaps submitted to the Bank on a monthly and quarterly basis. As part of the Global Finance department, critical accounting tasks include performing bank reconciliations, preparing turnaround documents, maintaining litigation schedules and ensuring the integrity of various reporting packages, with focus on completeness, validity and accuracy. The monthly and quarterly accounting processes to both internal and external stakeholders form an important and integral part of the overall reporting of the financial results for The Bank of Nova Scotia. Consequently, the incumbent will acquire a unique overview and understanding of various operating units within BNS.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

Perform month-end closing accounting activities and monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts

  • Prepare monthly journal entries and reports to support month-end departmental deadlines
  • Calculate subordinated loan interest and prepare journal entries and schedules to be distributed to various teams
  • Reconcile suspense control accounts for various branches and prepare journal entries as required
  • Liaise with SCUSA regarding intercompany expenses on a monthly basis and reconcile account for quarterly settlement
  • Compile data to request payment reimbursement on Scotia Commodities expenses
  • Prepare monthly commercial paper/GIC commission reconciliations and deliver monthly commission statements to vendors
  • Maintain and produce monthly reconciliations for various assigned key control accounts and identify variances as required from Regulatory and Compliance department
Financial Statements for Regulatory and Statutory Reporting
  • Provide reliable financial information, analyses and other support as required by senior management and for audit purposes.
  • Preparation of note disclosures for the annual audited financial statements
  • Communicate with auditors from time to time to explain various procedures and respond to queries.
Complete daily bank reconciliations and cash summary reports
  • Prepare bank reconciliation to ensure outstanding items are resolved
  • Process journal entries to apply incoming deposits or outgoing payments to requested accounts
  • Process stop payment requests from Global Payment Operations
  • Liaise and obtain additional information from the Business Service Centre relating to outstanding reconciling items
  • Review outstanding cheques and update stale-dated cheque list on a regular basis
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly cash summary reports and report material day-over-day changes
Prepare turnaround documents for monthly financial reporting
  • Report year-to-date average balances and interest of BNS internal swaps, call loans for various counterparty transits
  • Prepare monthly Cash Leadsheet by reviewing and analyzing SCI month-end bank reconciliations, and submit settlement-date adjustments for reconciling cash items
  • Report monthly and year-to-date average balances of BNS SCI bank accounts for various counterparty transits
  • Prepare monthly eTAD report to provide Global Risk Management with updated deposits with banks and non-BNS banker acceptance figures
Responsible for booking of SCI litigation and client complaint provisions
  • Update and maintain Legal Provisions schedule for newly-initiated provisions, settlement payments or cancelled provisions and compare with report provided and signed by Legal Department
  • Provide list of new events or changes on a quarterly basis to Global Operational Risk team
Maintaining Tymetrix receivables schedule
  • Import Tymetrix file on a weekly basis and submit invoices to Global Payment Operations for payment processing
  • Process and apply journals for incoming deposits from legal firms to the Tymetrix receivables account
  • Provide schedule on a quarterly basis to the Legal Department team to liaise with the legal firms
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have:
  • Requires equivalent of a university degree and/or an accounting designation along with two to five years of working experience in an investment or financial institution industry
  • Solid background in accounting is essential to comprehend, interpret and compile complex projects, together with proven organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt to a number of conflicting deadlines and quickly grasp and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate (written and verbal) across variety levels of management, both internal and external
  • Strong PC skills and working knowledge of the various operating systems used in the day to day operations of a Finance Department (PeopleSoft Financials, Broadridge, OBIEE, SmartView, Excel, Microsoft Office)
