Position Overview

The Department of Financial Reporting in Finance is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Senior Analyst for approximately 19 months.

This position reports to the Manager, Financial Reporting and is required to deal with multiple and competing deadlines from all areas of the University and therefore must have the flexibility to shift priorities immediately. The environment can be ambiguous, with continually changing systems and processes.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Consulting Services

  • Identify areas for accounting and/or reporting improvements. Gain understanding of current processes and reporting objectives and then develop, implement and test the solution that best meets the objectives.
  • Provide accurate, timely, relevant information and data analysis using the data warehouse and other technological tools to those that need it.
  • Keep current with relevant developments, standards and trends within the accounting profession and determine impact and any application on university reporting. Share this knowledge with staff and colleagues.
  • Successful and timely completion of special assignments and projects, including reports on findings, recommendations and outcomes.
  • Develop and design procedures & policies to meet the current and emerging needs of the University.
  • Implement and support change successfully.
Communications/Relationships
  • Proactively develop and maintain trustworthy, productive, problem-solving working relationships with colleagues, staff, line managers and external consultants so that expert opinions and advice are sought where appropriate and considered reliable.
  • Communications are timely, informative, confidential and appropriately tailored to the level of the end user.
  • Coach and facilitate staff, team and project members to develop and put into practice effective problem solving skills.
  • Communicate with University community to develop full understanding of and compliance with financial and budget policies and processes to ensure the financial transactions and budgets of the University are recorded appropriately and in a timely manner.
Financial Reporting
  • Monthly financial reports, variance reports and related analysis are prepared accurately and within predetermined timelines.
  • Annual financial statements including working papers, notes, and analysis are prepared accurately in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles within the timelines set out in the year end schedule.
  • Ad hoc financial analysis, reports & forecasts are prepared as requested by various stakeholders including senior administration and budget units. Information is completed accurately and in accordance with specifications and timelines determined from the end user.
Supervisory
  • Provide support to the Manager, Financial Reporting with planning, directing and scheduling the operational work of staff.
  • Recruitment, performance evaluation, development and training of staff, as required.
  • Staff are well trained, competent, supported in their work and encouraged in their professional development.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) with a related university degree
  • Significant work experience in various accounting and analyst functions (5+ years)
  • An understanding of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAB) would be an asset
  • Intermediate to Expert user of computer software applications, including Excel, SAGE 300, PeopleSoft query and Cognos including data warehousing and business intelligence tools
  • Supervisory experience and ability to provide direction and leadership to staff
  • A working knowledge of CaseWare would be an asset
  • This position requires a high attention to detail
  • Responsible for overseeing the University\'s chart of accounts, chartfields, and internal reporting workflow and reporting flow structure
  • Experience with accounting for internally and externally restricted (net) assets and multiple fund structures is considered an asset
