This is a temporary 15-month full time position, with potential for extension.

The work involves providing expert knowledge in specialized areas:

Applying substantive body of knowledge, including knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards and other general accounting practices

Identifying and resolving complex problems

Establishing methodologies

Recommending updates to operating procedures to improve accuracy and efficiencies

Training and developing staff, assigning work, scheduling staff, monitoring performance, ensuring quality of work and ensuring compliance with Board policy and regulations

Utilizing sophisticated software applications

Troubleshooting routine unit computer problems

Designing and utilizing complex spreadsheets

Coordinating general ledger account structure and closings of the general ledger

Analysing complex and sensitive accounts to determine adjustments and actions

Assisting management to address major accounting and financial reporting issues

Researching and advising on taxation issues; and preparing compliance reports

Achieving accuracy in complex work

Organizing, prioritizing and scheduling diverse tasks to ensure the orderly, accurate completion of work in accordance with competing deadlines and requirements

Exercising considerable independent action and judgement within defined parameters

Communicating complex information

An employee in this classification provides a high level of customer service to internal and external stakeholders, including communication around the application of legislation and Board policies to staff throughout the District. Effective communication skills, written and oral, are required.

The work of an employee in this classification is performed under general direction of the Manager, Fiscal Management Services, with minimum supervision and considerable independence of judgement and action exercised within established policies and regulations. Liaison with all levels of internal District staff, District sites and external stakeholders is required. A Senior Accounting Assistant reports to Management and participates in the work of junior team members as needed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of grade 12, and third level of a recognized professional accounting body\'s program or equivalent training in accounting or business administration (accounting major) from a post-secondary institute recognized by the District.

Software course certificates, and/or demonstrated experience and proficiency.

Two years\' recent full-time experience as an accounting technician in a similar computerized financial services environment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
