Position Title: Seasonal Summer Student /Research Assistant

Summary of Position

Reporting to the Manager Farm of the Future, the student or research assistant is responsible for assisting in the execution of research trials and farm work: picking rocks, collecting field data, sampling of soil, flying drone, harvesting 10-foot potato digs, potato grading, data management, analysis and report writing.

Qualifications

To qualify, the employee must be:

• between the ages of 15 and 30 inclusive when the project started
• unemployed or underemployed. Underemployed includes:

• students or individuals who are currently employed and are taking on significantly greater responsibilities and complexity in their employment duties or more hours of work during the project.
• those who are occupying a position for which they are overqualified, as per their education.
• a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
• not in receipt of Employment Insurance during the work term

• Basic computer skills is essential
• Passion to learn data analysis and develop new skills
• Experience with potato or other crop production is an asset

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following

The student or research assistant is responsible for field sample collection, potato grading, trial data collection, management, analysis and reporting. This individual will be required to perform different fieldwork related tasks as assigned and ensure that all elements of the fieldwork are flawlessly executed, while maintaining their own safety and the safety of the crew. Ability to think outside the box and to provide creative solutions.

Work Environment

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
• Employee will be required to perform duties in an agricultural setting to include potato fields and potato storages.
• Employee is expected to be open to workday with mixture of both indoor and outdoor work
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and telephone keyboard and talk or hear.
• Requires visual acuity to focus on desktop and/or laptop computer screen.
• Requires standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time, talking and listening.
• Work demands may fluctuate seasonally related to farming cycles, especially during planting and harvesting.
